So I ordered my first laptop, a Vostro 1400 a few weeks ago and received it this week. First time I turned it on I noticed light leakage on the bottom (possibly on the top corners too) and it actually is a bit distracting. Colors are a bit more washed out on the bottom than top. My screen is a SEC3157.

I already put in an order for a replacement, but I doubt the screen would be much better. The screen is the only problem I have with the laptop, which make the whole issue all the more disappointing.

I'm posting a few pictures from my webcam of the leakage to see if it's worth having a concern about. I don't really know what's bad leakage and what's acceptable since I haven't dealt with it before (this is my first LCD). The pics probably exaggerate the leakage, but it's the best I can do. I'll try posting some pictures at night later so that light from my windows doesn't interfere. From the pics, is the leakage anything too major?

[Note: webcam cord is what appears in the reflection of the screen] Thanks.

Ooohhh, it's just the cord. I thought it was an extra long bendy straw :D

As for the screen, that's pretty bad, though the exposure is probably emphasizing it. It's up to you whether or not you want to exchange it.

I'd aggre with coriolis that it is indeed pretty bad, but the decision is up to you not us

if it is already distracting to you, imagine how it will be a couple of weeks or months from now. You'll always notice it and it will just keep bothering you. I would go with replacement

A question, I have heard that AUO is becoming the primary manufacturer for Vostro screens, but besides SEC (Samsung), does LG or CMO make screens for Vostros?

That seems to be really bad... my leakage only takes up about 1/10th of the screen or so.

And yes, LG does make dell screens. I still haven't figured out how to find out what screen you have... how do you do that?

dell's suppliers for screens are as follows:

auo, lg phillips, sec - seiko epson (in coordination with samsung as i have found out), cpt, chi mei, and shp (i still cant figure out who this is)

Well looking at my light leakage again, I'm pretty annoyed by it. Leakage is about 50% of the screen...and I don't know if it's possible but I almost think that there is leakage at the top two corners. In a dark room, and a black screen...the whole screen seems to have a gray color to it. DVD movies are a bit washed out.

I ran into an LPL screen at a store...not on a Dell laptop...with absolutely no light leakage at all a few days ago. It really surprised me, but the laptop was over $1,500 anyways, so you get what you pay for. However, I did notice that most laptops have leakage, but it's tough to gauge in brightly-lit store displays.

my screen looks somewhat like that when it boots up, but when watching a movie or playing games that is absolutely not noticeable and that exaggerated.

I'll try running a DVD or game on it some more and see how it goes. With the budget price of the laptop, I actually have convinced myself to live with the screen if I have to, considering it only has the one leakage flaw (if I don't count that the battery level indicator doesn't light up, but that's another issue).

Actually I think some of the color wash out can be dealt with if I tinker with graphics drivers...and even LCD calibration, but I'm waiting on it until I see the replacement screen.
