Just found this forum and I need some help. I want to buy my daughter a notebook for college for Christmas. Iv'e been surfing the web for a week trying to make a informed decision on which one to buy and I'm now more confused than ever. I just got a Dell catalog in the mail and was looking at the Inspiron 1150 . I need something fairly durable ( my daughter is tough on things) What model do you guys recommend or should I look at something else. I really appreciate your opinions. I am on a budget so I want to stay close to $1000.00. At the same time if I can't get something decent in this price range I would rather pay more for a good piece of equipment. Thank!

The Inspiron 1150 is probably one of the better budget notebooks out there. It's not the most durable though, but unless you're willing to spend $1400 or up on something like an IBM R51 series notebook or Fujitsu S6000/S7000 series notebook you'll probably be dealing with a notebook that's not top of the line as far as top knotch components and construction

If you're on a budget though, I would go with Dell. You'll get the most bang for the buck there and their customer service and support is decent. Use available coupon codes to get the price down if that helps.

If your daughter is rugged with things I wouldn't get a Dell. Because, I have had a Dell Inspiron 1100 and it got lots of scratches and nicks just from daily travel! I was really dissapointed. And, if anything breaks Dell stinks on customer service. I would recommend either a Toshiba or IBM. Right now, you can get the Toshiba A60 at Toshiba Direct for $699! Which is a good deal because Toshiba includes all kinds of useful software unlike Dell. And, IBM has the G-Series (Desktop Replacement) available for $799. However, you would/should spend more because it only comes with 128MB RAM! 256MB is bare minimal for Windows XP.

    I hope this helps! [ ;)]
