Ok I ordered this laptop, I am going to be doing everything, but mostly browsing the net, play a few games, not many though. (80%-Internet, have a lot of programs open at once, Listening/downloading music, etc. 30%-PLaying games. I was going to get the 9300, but I dont play games THAT much to get it. Is it still O.K to get an 9300 for my standards?

I just need a computer thats fast for everything, and heres what I picked out.

    Inspiron 6000
    Intel M processer 770(2.13Hz/2mb Cache 533Mhz FSB)
    XP Pro
    15.4 Ultra Sharp WSXGA+LCA panel
    1GB shared ddr2 sdram 1 DIMM Memory
    Integrates acce; 900 graphics card
    60GB 7200RPM HD
    24x CD burner/dvd combo drive
    intel Pro 2200 Internal Wireless (802.11 b/g)
    6-cell lithium battery
    XP Pro backup cd's

    1660$

Would you reccomend a 9300 for my standards, or will this 6000 hold up fine?

I would upgrade to the ATI x300 128mb if you are going to play ANY games.. Beleive me you will be much happier.. Or even the 64meg hyper memory, since you dont play THAT many games. Integrated Graphics is a downer. And for basic users (web surfers and Office peeps

Hi. You mentioned already ordering it, but, in case you're considering cancelling and reordering or you just put your current setup in a shopping cart, here are some thoughts.
    1) You didn't say anything about how mobile you want it to be.
    A) If you don't need to move it around at all, squash the notebook, save yourself some money, and get a midrange desktop.
    B) If you will move it a little bit, consider the 9300 simply because you'll be playing enough games to warrant a larger screen.
    C) If you plan on moving it often, the 6000 makes more sense.
    D) If you plan to take it with you everywhere (for instance, if you're a grad student), consider getting something a little bit smaller, such as Dell's XPS M140; the keyboard is a comfortable size.

OK, so I'm writing the rest of this assuming you're sticking with the 6000, which is a great well-rounded choice. Start from the second-cheapest basic configuration.

    2) You mentioned downloarding and listening to music. If so, you should probably spring for a larger hard drive. I think the 6000 tops out at 80 GB. You can save $65 by getting the 80 GB hard drive at 5400 RPM.

    3) If music is a big thing for you, consider getting Win XP Media Center Edition instead of Professional. It's got features specifically for that purpose and costs $95 less.

    4) Definitely get a DVD burner. MUST MUST MUST. I swear on my life you will be glad you have it.

    5) If you'll be on the go a lot, consider a second battery.

    6) Consider dropping down to a slower processor. It's highly unlikely that you'll notice the performance difference, and you save $240 by getting the 1.73 GHz.

    7) At this point, you've already chopped off enough of the cost to reward yourself with the better video card. Hopefully, someone who games more can comment on that.

    8) Spend an extra $214 for the 3-year Plus Solution package. That includes the Completecare service. In 2.5 years, you make something HAPPEN to your computer (big falls and being run over are just nasty). That $214 just bought you a newer, better computer.

    9) Consider getting one of the two mice they sell or one from some other place. They run from $10-$80.

    10) Enter this coupon code at the end, and you'll save $500 instead of 453: 407T14FZZ$T9WW

The setup I just described comes out to $1766 (without the mouse), and that gets you a second computer in 30 months. OK, now I'm depressing myself by thinking of the passage of time. If you want tp spend another few hundred bucks, you can buy me an LCD monitor. Seriously, though, when buying a luxury item, consider donating 2.5-5% (in this case, $45-$90) of that item's cost to the charity of your choice. I'm partial to the Sierra Club and World Wildlife Fund myself.

    Best wishes,
    Howie

Hi. Just realized this. If you use basically the same setup I described above (1.75 GHz, 80 GB hard drive, 1 GB memory, second battery, 3-year plan, etc.), you can go through this:

    http://www1.us.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/odg_special49?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs#offer

The add-ons will have different prices at first. You won't be able to get the better video card, but you'll save more than enough to buy one. Use the coupon at the shopping cart (407T14FZZ$T9WW), and it comes out to a little over $1300. This also depends on whether or not you toss in some sort of Office software.

I would get the minimum amount of memory, and go to an outside vendor like Newegg.com and order memory from there. In my opinion, 2.13 isn't worth the money. 2.0 or 1.73 are more affordable.

If you aren't looking for portability, go with the 9300. $1660 is a bit high for the 6000. The 6000 is more of a midrange laptop where as the 9300 is more on the higher end.

get, a I9300 with a Coupon, or get an ASUS Z70va with minimal specs, or ASUS Z71v is minimal specs.

Even with 30% gaming, your Dell 6000D with GMA900 won't do anything lol. now with an X300 you would be able to play games reasonably well.

    Thanks,

As previously mentioned, don't buy a laptop with integrated graphics if you plan on playing games.

I agree with SG - $1,600 is too much for an Inspiron 6000, considering they start for around $700 something. I suggest spec'ing out an i9300 for over $1,499 (since you need to spend that much to get the % off), then use the coupons.

ALso, I heard the screen resolution is tiny, and perhaps a pain in the ass for doing a lot of internet use... is this true?

    Thanks!!

Closed on weekends hmmm. I honestly thought that atleast the North American sales department for Dell would be open on weekends. I mean the calls mostly all go to India so with time difference, it would be morning (day) even for them now (11:55pm).

I hope by waiting until Monday it isn't too late for you. Perhaps try sending an e-mail with your tracking number on it to cover all your basis. Save a copy of the e-mail as well and ask for a reciept upon recieving (however that works).

    Just a suggestion.

Ok, I will do that tonight.

I have been trying to get ahold of someone since friday, and they gave me a number to my sales rep??? I tried calling him but he didn't pick up.

I ordered it thursday morning, so hopefully like you said, it's not to late. Mabye I can cancel the order without a fee, and plus that way I can have time to think which dell I want.
