My Toshiba Satellite 5205 is slowly dying - time for a new laptop. Couple of quick questions:

    1. How is the audio out of the speakers on the e1705? My current notebook has harmon/kardon speakers with a built in subwoofer - the audio is the best I've heard heard with a notebook. I read the review on here for the e1705 and learned that the speakers were "decent." I know its a relative issue, but can anyone elaborate? I like to be able to watch DVDs w/ good sound if possible.

    2. With the $750 coupon right now, this seems to be the best "bang for the buck" solution as far as notebooks go, especially on a core duo system. Are there better "bang for the buck" deals out there now?

    3. How much of a performance hit (again, relative, I know) do I get if I go with the T2300 processor?

    4. Anyone have any ideas how to schmooze/finagle, etc a better deal then the $340 for the 4 year "premium protection" package?

    Thanks in advance!!!

    1) If you want great audio you need headphones. The e1705 is average to above average in terms of sound. You can watch a movie, but it won't be a very rich experience.

    2) I think so, I picked up an e1705 for my desk for $1300, well stacked. Couldn't get a deal like that anywhere else.

    3) Depends on what you're doing.

    4) I recommend against it, look into insurance options through your carrier.

Shame about the audio. I'm spoiled by the audio in my current Toshiba.

As to what I'm doing... 75 percent of the time will be using it to browse the internet and do word processing and stuff. Sometimes like to game and sometimes like to watch movies.

For what you are going to use it for it is a excellent choice. The sound is great compared to other dell laptops.

If you're worried about the sound quality, you can always upgrade to an external USB or Firewire soundcard. I use an M-Audio Transit USB. Works/sounds great.
