My E1705 LCD when dead shortly after I added my new 24 inch monitor to it 2 days ago. Now the system think the external monitor is the default(it takes a long time for the screen to appear(takes about 20 seconds). As a result, my laptop now became the desktop!!!!! And I don't need any more desktop as I just ordered a new xps 410...
I can't perform any Dell diagnostics as pressing F12 key to do diagnostics test leads to a dead screen.
System Display under XP thinks the external monitor as the default screen, the second screen, which is the laptop's LCD not active(no matter what I did). It is hardware failure or some setting problem?
I have a E1705 with 7800 Go and 2 GB of memory. System is 14 months old and, with my luck.... I did not bought extended warranty(and forget to extend when warranty expired in June) from Dell!!!!! Does anyone know what is the minimum charge Dell charges????? Can anyone advise what I should do?????
Thanks.

What happens when you boot the computer with no external monitor attached? Also, try pressing Fn + F8.
-
Dead screen if I boot computer with no external monitor(system boot up, I think).
Already tried Fn + F8 to goggle thru, no different at all!!!!!
Any thought? -
Does the screen appear to be on if you boot up without an external monitor (i.e., does it just look like a screen displaying a black image), or is it off (no power at all, no glow).

What is the resolution of the image that's displaying on the external monitor?
Is your laptop's monitor able to display in that resolution? -
The dual-monitor set up did work for a day or two! I can drop image between the LCD and the external monitors no problem.
And then the LCD go dead quietely, but I did not pay attention for I was working primary at the 24 inch external monitor. I found it out when I tried to take the laptop and work in the other room.
The resolution should be 1900 x 1200. It is a new HDCP samsung syncmaster 245b. -
It sounds like your physical LCD died (or at least, a wire or power somewhere got disconnected). I would call Dell and ask them how much they think it would cost to have it looked at (to see what the actual problem is). If the whole LCD's dead, it may be more worthwhile to start looking at new computers rather than having it repaired (I suspect LCD replacements will be quite expensive since it's not under warranty).

NOt good at all.
Dell charge $159 just to look at it. Screen probably costs another $300, and perhaps another $100 for labor. $50 round trip shipping with insurance.
$600 to fix this? E1750 Core, T2500, 2GB memory, 60 GZ 7200 drive 7950 gs video xsvga screen. I am not sure at all! Odin243: I think you are right.
I am going to use he Free diagnostics coupon that I go from Central Computer tomorrow and get a free Estimate.
Keep you posted.
Thanks for replying me.

Call Dell, it costs $498(including labor) to replace the LCD, with only 90 days warranty.
Can anyone tell it should I start looking for the new computer?????
Thanks. -
How much will they charge just to diagnose the problem? As it may not require a whole LCD replacement.
-
$49 over the phone.
$199 when ship to them(Dell provide shipping), and minor parts service EXCEPT motherboard, LCD screen.
If LCD need to replace, another $299.
Need to pre-pay $199.
Talk to Dell, sounds like need LCD replacement for sure. Did not paid $49 for I skip the diagnostics part and go directly ask for price checking.
Just talked to another Dell contractors who came to fix my other desktop(anymore know why the a noisy drive keep seeking while the system is idle - % CPU time?) problem, he confirmed the LCD DEAD when I tell my story(off course, he did not look at my laptop, not authorized)!!!
Perhaps I should sell the laptop after I fix it. Do you think I can get $600? Similar configuration still worth $800-$900 in the outlet... Use the new money and get a new m1330 when they are available in the outlet....
Or I should fix it and use it until it die???? I really don't need the 17 inch laptop replacement now. Just got a new xps 410. I would prefer a smaller laptop if I need the mobility. Love the screen of 17 and its powerful features but hate the bulk size and short battery life.
Or am I better off with the new Vostro business laptop that sells around $700?? -
Do you still game on your laptop at all? If you got a new laptop, what would you require it be able to do?
-
I don't game at ALL! But my two sons do. They used my laptop to game when the gameing desktop is occupied(one gaming system with 24 inch monitor, two sons). This only perhaps at college break though, college son have his desktop at his school. Have promised my son to get him a m1310 or similar when he go to college next year.
I watched tv and movies in my laptop sometimes. Therefore, having a DVI is important. And I have been using my laptop since my desktop's hard disk go belly up 4 months ago. But now I just bought my new desktop with blu-ray(bought at outlet), I think I only need a average laptop for mobility for myself, perhaps.
Fix the laptop or not? -
I'd say sell the laptop. You can either have it fixed first, or not, perhaps try posting in the Buy/Sell/Trade forum and asking what they think. If it costs $500 to fix it, you likely won't net much out of the sale, but perhaps a few hundred on ebay. If you decide to sell it and buy a new, more portable laptop, I recommend you post a FAQ in the What Notebook Should I Buy section.

Latest find, external output only work on DVI.
I took the laptop to local shop. They called me NO external connection on VGA!!!!!
So, can I conclude it is the 7800 go graphical card's problem???????
Thanks for responding. -
That's possible, if you want to you can buy a new card and see if it fixes the problem.
-
I think the $199 also cover GPU too!
With my luck, they probably give me the 7950 gs instead - I believe the 7800 gs should be long gone already.
Probably the 7800 get over-headed and short circuited some part due to the 24 inch monitor set-up. The LCD gone after a day or two!
Have my finger crossed!!!!!
No LCD display after dual monitor set-up
