Has anyone else noticed that the two high resolution screen options for the M1530 are not available through the employee purchase program or member purchase program (or whatever it is called)?
Only the 1280x800 screen is an option.

    Has anyone else noticed this?
I hope there will be an opportunity to choose a high res screen sometime this month... because I want to take advantage of the $669 deal.

I used the online chat to talk to a rep and he only suggested to wait and it might change.

They do have them if you ring up. They are just not offering the options on their website to prevent an overburdening demand thus delaying orders.

i tried getting it over the phone, my man Kumar said that you can't do it. i just ordered it anyways...they probably won't give you the option any time soon, they don't wanna give you TOO good of a deal, this way makes them more money

EPP phone support is closed today & open for business on Weds. I called Dell last night, and am working with a rep for the upgrade & price match final approval (haven't heard back yet).

I learned from everyone here that if you if you call them, they will work something out with you, you just may have to go thru a few reps! Which, if I haven't heard back from later, I will be calling again and trying!
    Good luck! :)

When does the -$669 deal expire? I'd like to order a high res or possibly an LCD backlit screen as well tru EPP. (Thinking about the 1330 as well, would be nice to be able to compare them in person.)

Once I put an M1530 in my cart it says:
    "Expires Thursday, January 31, 2008"

Ok, everyone... You CAN get the higher res screen through EPP, but you have to call them over the phone. I just did this myself. The problem is that sometimes the reps have a hard time finding the code for the upgraded LCSs. So here are the codes for your reference:

    1440x900 --> DHHRCAM [320-6078]

    1680x1050 --> WSXGA [320-6288]

The Dell EPP Phone number is: 1-877-886-3355

I hope this helps some of you!

Someone give this man a biscuit, the codes will help tremendously. I thought they might deny you the upper resolutions so that they can rid of their initial high demand; seems theres another issue at hand.

    Thanks Seeingwhite!

In case anyone else was trying...
The AAA discount is a coupon code and it appears to me that it can only be used in the "Member Purchase Program" from the link at AAA.
Just like for EPP, no high res display options are available for the -$669 M1530 deal.

I even tried using the coupon code in the normal "Home and Home Office" checkout.. but it yelled at me:
"We're sorry, the coupon you entered is not valid for the customer segment in which you are shopping"

So I guess you'd have to call to use the AAA discount too.
    FYI

Is it possible to downgrade your ram or network card with the $669 deal over the phone? I am going to try and do it tomorrow, although they said my laptop might ship out tommorow

For those of you having trouble getting the higher resolution LCDs through the EPP website and over the phone, here is the direct number for an EPP sales Rep who has agreed to have her number posted on the forums. She was very friendly and helpful to me.

    Kristi Trent
    Dell EPP
    1-800-879-3355 x 2166807
    [email protected]

Remember though: She only takes Employee Purchase Program (EPP) orders and she can help with credit card or DPA orders only. And please be nice so she doesn't hate me if I need to place another Dell order in the future. :D

Well I went back to configure under the membership program and they now do have the higher resolutions as choices on there. Does anyone know If you can get any better deals on the phone rather than online?

Interesting, I just tried it and you are right. The option is there now. You may get a better deal by having them configure it over the phone. I personally prefer to order online because its easier. You may save a few bucks though by doing it over the phone. It think mine came out a little cheaper overall, plus I got free overnight shipping. YMMV.

Order it over the phone. I wasn't sure if I did so I decided to give it a shot and I got an extra 8% off and free overnight shipping. Find the best price you can online and then say "Well I can get it for the same price your telling me online, why should I get it from you? What else can you give me?" and they will always give you something extra such as an extra discount, more ram, bigger hard drive, etc. because they want the sales commission...a smaller commission is better than no commission!

I dunno, you would have to call them and see. Tell them you found another deal somewhere else and they will give you the best deal they can. They purposely don't give you all of the possible deals to get more commission but tell them you found a better deal somewhere and they will throw some more extras in if they can.

Can you email sales reps and customize and do all that stuff and get a cheaper price just like you would on the phone. I am not a huge fan of being on the phone and would much rather type an email.

Congrats on the laptop and extras you scored. I'm hoping mine wont take long to get here because of the possible LCD screen delay.

I orded my M1530 but I might opt for the higher resolution. My question is what are the advantages. I went to the local kiosk but they only had the 1280x800. I don't watch alot of movies or gaming. Will the 1140x900 be noticable? Or would I be better off spending a few extra bucks on a better battery? I also orded mine the weekend through EPP, but the ship date isn't until late next week so I think I can still call and change it.

Yes but beware, Dell will often say that and then you will wake up tomorrow and see that is shipped already!

As far as LCD resolution goes, some good discussion on that here.

I would call as soon as you can and change it. I ordered mine 4 days and it wasn't supposed to ship until January 11th, yet I called today to cancel my order and re-order for a better discount, and they said it was in the boxing stage and if I had called a few hours later it would of been shipped!

I've had it in my mind that I want the highest res model (1680x1050) because I thought the higher the better. And I'm willing to spend the extra $100 for something that can't be easily changed later.

But maybe I don't want that?
I looked at a friend's laptop with 1680x1050 and I immediately thought I would never run the desktop in that res. Everything is too small for me. But I figured there might be SOME apps that I might want this... maybe in the future?

Also, if I have 1680x1050, but then change my settings to 1440x900, don't lines (text) look less crisp?
I mean... trying to map a 1440x900 image (the desktop) onto a 1680x1050 isn't perfect. You can't really have partial pixels... you know what i mean?

So... doesn't a desktop setting of 1440x900 look better on a 1440x900 screen?

Maybe I should be choosing this?
I was going to order tonight. I wonder if I HAVE to look at some laptops in person to make this choice.
    Any suggestions/comments?

By the way... it looks like I am running 3 PCs at 1024x768. Hmm.

I'm starting to look on the web for explanations of screen resolution and desktop resolution.
I gather that I can adjust the DPI in Windows to match the screen... but whether or not applications use this properly is hit or miss.

    Head... about to.... explode....

I'd love it if someone would help me decide!

Is 1440x900 much brighter than 1280x800. I don't talk about technical brightness 250 nits compare to 220 nits. I mean if you compare size by size and both screen have their brightness to the max.

If you have 3 computers all running 1024x768, then 1680x1050 on a 15.4" screen will probably seem like everything is really small to you. Heck, 1440x900 might be too high of a resolution for your tastes, too. But its hard to know what you will use the laptop for and how well you will adapt to a higher res screen. It took a bit of time for me to adapt to my 1900x1080 24" LCD, but I love it. I think that 1440x900 should be a good compromise for you, but its hard to say since you will be the one using the laptop.

You are correct, though when you say that setting your OS to display 1440x900 on a native 1680x1050 LCD will not look as crisp. Some LCDs are better at this than others, but the general rule is that non-native res on an LCD will be more blurry, fuzzy, soft, however you want to say it. ;)

Now I'm at work and I see I run at 1280x960. Going any higher here would bother me... and this is a 19" monitor. So I'm guessing that I wouldn't even run my desktop at 1440x900 on a 15.4". I have a friend with a Dell Precision at the higher res. I'll try to check his screen out at different resolutions tonight.
