If you are sure that it is not muted then go to Control Panel > Sound and Audio Devices > Audio (tab); Check the default device. It should be set to your primary sound card.

If you went to control panel and tried the front buttons, I would try restarting the computer.

Does the audio work with head phones? Also the master control may not be muted, but the wave/mp3 might be, if it is, theres your problem. Good luck

Loose/disconnected speaker cable would be my first guess. Have you contacted DELL yet? If your comforatable with working around inside your laptop you could check it yourself, if not you need to contact dell and either send it in or have a tech come take care of it.
