I haven't heard any complaints about 1420 screens. I only see screen problem with 1520 laptops. So this is a good sign because I ordered mine 1400 Vostro. I bet they will use the same screen as the Inspiron 1420. :)

    Any question here?

You shouldn't have any 'graininess' on any laptop screen, at any resolution.

Maybe on a few. My screen is fine though, and I'd assume most of them are.

Well another word for "grains" is "pixels" - all screens that involve pixels are going to have some 'graininess'

Now if it is uneven or inconsistent graininess, then thats a different story.

my 1420's 1400x900 screen is a little grainy...anyone who says it's "crystal clear" is just BSing you...unless dell gave him a different 1400x900 display.

Is it only grainy on that resolution? I hope so, because I don't plan on ever using that resolution :D

Does this graininess refer to the pixels themselves, or a coating on the screen?

If you scroll down a webpage, does the graininess follow your scrolling, or does it stay in one place?

it's the coating of the screen. changing the resolution won't change anything.

I honestly can't see any graininess on my 1440x900 screen. I have set it next to my MBP and an older E1505 and still don't see what other people are talking about. That being said, I will admit that I am disappointed with the screen overall. The MBP screen absolutely kills it in every aspect and even the E1505's display, despite being almost 1.5 years old is slightly better. My 1420 screen has a fair amount of light leakage on the bottom of the screen and is generally not the brightest screen. Even at the brightest setting, the E1505 seems to have a another 1 or 2 levels of brightness over the 1420.

So yeah, I am slightly disappointed in the screen. But for a < $1,100 machine, I still find it acceptable.
