I used to think so. Then I got my last two monitors and laptop from them.

Despite their reputation, they do make quality products. Because they mass produce so many PC's, they're like the Ford, GM, or Chrysler (and reluctantly Toyota) of the PC world. They actually create so many parts, and with good quality, its just that it seems like there's more issues because of the volume.

That being said, Dell does have the habit of picking one or two components of crappy quality - usually not affecting system stability. In the case of the Inspiron's and Vostro's many screens were crappy. But they *WILL* take care of you. I did three exchanges with my 24" LCD, two with my 20" and one with my Vostro, but they did eventually get me a quality part, and never flinched when requesting a replacement, and 100% on their dime.

They don't have the best tech or phone support, but when it comes to quality product and replacements, they are pretty good.

Hi all, After some read in this thread..

Yes its confirmed 64bits is better (i.e. in max) in some massive polygons 3DCG scene.. (been leaning towards 64bits platform for this) but after all this are we going back to 32? with all hardwares now supporting something like 16GB ram?

htwingnut name me a good Chrysler, Ford or GM car, besides the ones build in Europe (Chrysler has poor quality cars even in Europe).
Basically with x64 the limit isn't 16GB, it's more than a TB if I'm not mistaken here.

Far worse. XP 64-bit was developed more for the developer world and was Microsoft's first try at 64-bit. This was really to see the reaction and get some of the bugs out of the system. The AMD side seems to have better support than Intel as it was originally only for AMD.

I personally use Acronis, but there's a few others out there. I think Vista's backup function does a good job with one partition systems as well, but I think that's with Ultimate.

I'm also sorry if I sounded a little harsh. I take anything bad back.

You're right. I dug up the numbers before, Microsoft imposed a software limit, where the hardware limit is quite a bit.

Like I said, there are some great threads here concerning x64 drivers. You really can't go wrong by reading those and use other drivers, besides the ones coming from Dell.

here is a new vista 64 patch which cannot be updated automatically but seems to be very critical for mobile users:
This update improves the compatibility, reliability, and stability of Windows Vista. This update includes the following improvements ->

    * It extends the battery life for mobile devices.
    * It improves the stability of portable computers and of desktop computers that use an uninterruptable power supply (UPS).
    * It improves the reliability of Windows Vista when you open the menu of a startup application.
    * It improves the stability of wireless network services.
    * It shortens the startup time of Windows Vista by using a better timing structure.
    * It shortens the recovery time after Windows Vista experiences a period of inactivity.
    * It shortens the recovery time when you try to exit the Photos screen saver.
    * It improves the stability of Windows PowerShell.

Ok, just installed vista x64 Ultimate. I was able to install all drivers, used the latest x64 Nvidia drivers from Laptopvideo2go.
Everything works. inlcuding the UPEK fingeprint scanner.
OS feels a bit more robust/laid back. didn't experience any weird stuff so far....

Maybe I'm a bit biased because I'm an engineer at Chrysler (previously at Ford), but I won't take offense.

Unfortunately perceived quality is different than actual quality, and from the past, Chrysler has had its fair share of reasons to give people their doubts. That being said, while the latest focus has been saving money, continued and improved quality is top priority. I won't go into details how Chrysler group (Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge) products have won more quality awards per vehicles built than the perceived high quality / high cost products like Mercedes, BMW, Volvo, and Saab. The difference is that those dealerships take care of the customers better than typical American OEM's. Unfortunately dealerships are independently owned, so the OEM's don't have a whole lot of control over that... but I digress.

But just to answer your question:

    Chrysler 300
    Minivan - 2008 especially
    Ram Truck

    Three great products...

I miss my 2004 Ford Ranger :( Fantastic vehicle.
I'm going for a Toyota diesel truck when I get back to the states unless anyone can convince me otherwise. BTW, I'm converting it to bio-diesel so I don't have to suffer through gas going through $10/gal from price gouging like it did last year.

This thread's done as it's off topic and Dell has noted that the 64-bit along with ubuntu was removed because stuff was actually getting updated as opposed to discontinued. Reference a few posts above.
