Was just looking at the Inspiron 1520 with Windows XP (not the Inspiron 1525) and noticed that they removed the ability to select either the 8400M or 8600M GeForce cards. However, you can still configure an Inspiron 1420 with a 8400M. Can anyone confirm why?

hmmm, the 1720 still has the 8600 as an option.. perhaps its just an error on Dell's website.. odd.. also the Vostro 1500 still has the 8600 option aswell.. and its identical to the 1520...

It is a discontinued laptop. They are likely out of those parts.

Dell's been moving to differentiate between their Inspiron and XPS series. Inspirons will be cheap, everyday computers, while the XPS series will have all the bells and whistles. Currently, there's still the Vostro 1500.

Does this mean if the Inspiron 1520's that still have a 8600GT will not be able to get a replacement GPU? If a problem arises?.

They'll have replacements. Just because they're not selling something doesn't mean their not supporting it too.

They might. It seems likely that they keep a few parts for repair and warranty purposes. However, I've heard of situations where people's Dells have problems while under warrant and Dell does not have the parts to fix it. So instead of fixing the old one, they just give them a brand new model... so it's not all bad.

Dell doesn't want the Inspirons cutting into their XPS sales.
Case in point, I bought my E1705 instead of the M1710 cause it was a powerful alternative and $1000 cheaper. I'm sure many others did too, and they wont make that mistake again.

You could look in the Outlet for one with a 8600m.
OR you could call them and see if they would configure it with a 8600m (since they seem to be trying to clear out the 1520s maybe they'd give you discount)
OR look into a Vostro 1500 (same as the 1520).

Well, I'm glad I got my Inspiron 1520 with 8600M GT before that happened.

What's the point of getting a 1520 now if you can get a thinner 1525 for a reduced cost?

Well, I think you've hit the nail right on the head. It seems like good way for them to phase out XP and force everyone onto Vista.
