I was customizing a Dell XPS gaming laptop. But the site only gives me an option for dual Geforce 8800M GTX. Can't I have just a single one ? I dont WANT two of em'. Please advise.

Yeah, give them a call and see. Chances are the website isn't listing single cards because of supply/demand issues.

    get the gateway P-6831FX
Normally I wouldn't advocate gateway but this is a sick high end system they've got. get the lowest end processor you can get then upgrade the cpu to the new penryn. that's what I would do if I was getting a 17' gaming laptop.

Hmmm... either way I'm getting the Sager NP5792 with the Penryn. I think even with a single GPU the Dell is still overpriced.

When selecting computers, if you select the "best" option at the beginning before customizing, then you can't choose a single 8800m GTX. See attached pic.

EDIT: nvm even when configuring a computer from the "Good" option, only SLI is available as an upgrade. I posted too quickly..

The only single card currently available for the laptop is the 8700m.

Personally I would go for the dual 8800GTX SLI if you can stretch to it. You can switch off SLI to use a single card if you wish, but it just means that in teh future as the drivers get better and the stability issues get sorted, at least you have the option to switch SLI on and double your GPU power.

When the 8700m SLI was released I noticed that it took several months for the single GPU card to be released. I think the same will happen with the 8800mGTX. It will probably take a while before they release a single GPU version.

Dude, the only reason I started this thread, from the very title itself, is because neither can I "stretch" it to dual cards as per my rather very flexible budget, nor do I want to.
And if they won't offer single, screw Dell anyway, I'm happy with my still cheaper and more affordable Sager config.
    Thanks! :)

Ok chill, I was just offering my personal opinion. As I said, the single card probably wont come for a while yet....

Thanks for the info. But that ain't changing my choice of a new (and my first) laptop, too bad though :( Maybe just maybe I might think of considering the Alienware Area-51 since it's smaller (15.4").

Not sure TBH, I didnt really look into ther laptops very much. Personally my choice was limited as I got the M1730 full spec for pretty much next to nothing as an incentive from Dell for placing a very large order at work with them.
