    Alright, here it goes...

Last night I installed SP1 via WindowsUpdate. After I rebooted my computer, I had no sound. Sound files won't even show as playing in any media players, let alone produce sound. I had no issues with being able to access the update due to my sound card drivers.

I attempted to uninstall and then reinstall the driver in device manager but this did not help. I fiddled around in the Sound settings in control panel and this also has done nothing. I have a Vostro 1500 with the Sigmatel High Definition Audio Codec. The driver was v 6.10.0.5614 at time of initial SP1 installation.

I went on Dell's website and found a driver that SAYS it is more recent date-wise but is labeled as 6.10.0.5609. I installed this and my sound came back...until I restarted again, that is. Reinstalling the driver subsequent times has done nothing. Can't get sound whatsoever.

I went ahead and removed SP1 and voila, my sound came back. Updated the driver to the one that briefly gave me sound whilst running SP1, it works, and I then proceed to reinstall SP1. Sounds works fine....until I restart, once again.

Any have any ideas? I have searched extensively on this and found plenty of sound-related issues with SP1, but nothing has helped me out. This is BS

I have .5614 driver and I have not had any problems with SP1.

Reading Microsoft Support info, it seems that it has been a problem.

    You might try this driver:

    Sigmatel Driver

I understand from your post that you checked the settings, but make sure that the source and output are set correctly in the properties. You need to make sure that the output is set correctly-try "Speakers/Headphones" and set properties to 16bit 192,000 Hz under Advanced tab. Make sure that the PC speaker button is not checked under the Custom tab. Also check Sound Schemes and make sure that Windows Default is selected and not No Sounds
