Not sure if this is normal but I noticed that on "Balanced" and "Power Saver" mode the computer makes a weird noise (but it's not very loud). At first I thought it was the hard disk but the noise goes away as soon as I change to "High Performance". Is this normal? I'm using the inspiron 1520.

    Good Answer.

It's caused by some defective Core 2 Duos when they go into the lowest power state. There are so-called fixes by stopping the CPU from reaching that power state, but I'm not sure if Dell has a BIOS fix like HP. If you can deal with it, have Dell exchange it out for you.

This is something different. My old HP notebook had CPU whine. This is coming from the screen. The noise actually changes as I move the screen as well as I change brightness levels :(

There was somebody else on these forums that had the same problem if I recall correctly. I couldn't find the thread, maybe do a search. The screen didn't make the noise when on the highest brightness, but it did when the brightness was lowered, which my explain why it happens when you switch to lower power modes, since by default those modes dim the screen.

I would send it back to dell to be fixed.

I experienced this on my old HP zd7000. After research, I think it was the screen. I never returned it or had it fixed, but I recall a few articles out there where it was justified for some to request a new monitor.

The article I mention concerned desktop LCD's, though.

    Good luck.
