    Yep.

Norton 2007 Internet Security is a performance killer. You all might remember me *****ing about the Core 2 Duo being slow... but after I uninstalled it, all of my programs started popping open immediately. Blazing performance, finally! So yeah, Norton sucks. I'm using Kaspersky Internet Security Version 6.0 at the moment. My brother works at the FBI and says it's the best antivirus program out there.

Anyway, Kaspersky = ZERO impact on performance = AWESOME

Now, I've heard that uninstalling Norton leaves behind files... how do I delete them all?

    Violent, no doubt.

You might try and use third-party programs such as CC Cleaner to remove any residual files that Windows programs leave behind.

Glad to hear that your finally seeing the performance lol.
Norton is one of the worst antivirus software I've seen.

Kaspersky works great for me also. But I'm using NOD32, it has even less of an impact to the system than Kaspersky.

Kaspersky is light on resources. So is the free AVG antivirus.

To clean out unwanted files, you could go to the Program Files folder in your C drive and simply delete folders named Norton or Symantec or whatever.

Best thing to do is to completly reformat after you've uninstalled Norton. Just my suggestion though

Re-formating after Norton is a good idea.
Uninstalling leaves a lot of files behind.
When I was supporting Symantec Corporate (NAV) I was using a tool called NONAV to clean the system.
It should work for 2007 version as well (must say I didn't try it).

    http://www.mickelson.org/files/zips/nonav.zip

    More info about the tool:
    ...

NONAV is an unsupported Symantec tool for removing files and registry keys from Norton Antivirus / Symantec Antivirus. This is helpful for example when an upgrade from an older version fails and you need to prepare the machine for a clean re-installation.

The tool can be sent out to customers as long as they have been informed that nonav is an unsupported tool / without warranty and provided "as-is".

NONAV removes the following products from filesystem/registry:

    NAV Norton Antivirus 4.x / 5.x
NAVCE Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition 7.0x 7.5x 7.6x
SAVCE Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition 8.0x 8.1x 9.x
    SSC Symantec System Center (from CE 7.x / 8.x / 9.x)
    AMS Alert Management System (from CE 7.x / 8.x / 9.x)
SCF Symantec Client Firewall 5.x 7.x

NONAV can also be set to remove the following components:

    Symevent drivers
    LiveUpdate (1.5-2.0)
    shared Virus Definitions
Central Quarantine Server / Quarantine Console

NONAV should leave other Symantec products alone on the machine but only very limited testing has been done on this.

PcAnywhere 10.5 / 11, Ghost 8.0/2003 and the Central Quarantine Server has been tested and appear to work fine after running nonav.

NONAV is designed to work on the following OS:

    Windows 2003 Server
    Windows XP
    Windows 2000 Professional / Server
    Windows NT4 Workstation / Server
    Windows ME
    Windows 98
    Windows 95

Restart when finished and retry the install, if you want to.

    Hi.

All I did was go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and clicked uninstall. It didn't give me any trouble at all.

Okay - I will probably take heat for saying this - but so far I like Norton.

I have only had my laptop for about two weeks - and I have been playing with it to prepare it for family xmas gift.

Before my laptop arrived - I did my homework. Everyone said Norton sucked and ZoneAlarm Suite was the program to get.

Norton was presintalled on my E1505 - so I deleted it using decrapifier and then tried (many times) to get ZA to work - it did - but it slowed my system down and created long boot times. Also the costant popups were **** scary to a windows newbie "warning xxx could be trying to destroy your life - allow?"

I restored the dell system and got the trial version of Norton running now. My boottimes are fast and I see no problems (yet) with operating speed.

When I went on ZA site (can't call them without taking out a home loan) - I got a whole page of instructions on how I was supposed to install ZA to fix this problem - and I figured why should I have to become a "expert" in windows and configuring just to get ZA to install and work right - if Norton works fine without me doing anything.

I don't know - maybe I will change my mind over the next month or two during the Norton trial period - but so far so good.

Norton sucks, I used it long time back then switched to Mcafee but that too became resource hogging over the years; after trying out few other products I settled on Nod32, that too not real time. I have it installed but not running (I’m done with virus guards eating up my resources), only run it if I feel suspicions or need to check some particular file. And it has been almost a year now, so far no virus attacks. If you know what you are doing then you don’t need a virus guard running all the time.

As for getting rid of Norton => reinstalling windows is the only sure way

Why would anyone uninstall Norton and then reformat? If you are going to reformat, why waste time uninstalling Norton? Time to kill?

    Does anyone here use Kaspersky?

The user interface is not so great... that's the only bad thing about it.

I can't seem to do a full system scan... When I do a "Scan My Computer," it onyl scans about 30K files. I know that I have at least 120K files.

Anyone know how to go about this?

I use Norton, seems fine to me, if I want to play high memory games (not very often but sometimes), I just turn it off (Auto-Protect anyway) or close CCApp.exe and restart it when finished.

I have tried Kaspersky, AVG, Avast, Mcafee, and Norton. Each has had their own faults.
Kaspersky conflicted with the firewall and required allot of modifications that did not work in the end.

AVG worked but failed to detect 2 virus's,

Avast and Mcafee both worked but caused minor problems (hangs and program crashing) and the interface was not to my liking.

Norton is a hog but works. The normal edition increasingly takes up resources as time go by (months). Also the latest version holds the laptop at boot for 2 minutes while it does some scan.

Norton corporate is the best overall from my experiences. Nothing bad to say either then I forget that it is running other then it is corp edition and is not for retail use.

Any help? If Norton is slowing your computer you can try and uninstall and re-installing but that always results is problems. I just rebuild the system when that happens.

Couldn't agree more. Got rid of Norton months ago, haven't looked back since. Especially as I browse with Firefox, and not Internet Explorer, so feel totally comfortable running my laptop without any always-on antivirus software. All I do is perform an occassional sweep with Adaware any once in a while - and it rarely, if ever, picks up anything serious! When I get my new laptop in a couple of weeks, there is absolutely no way Norton will go near it!

I think norton is pretty bad. My last couple of computers have come with it, and Job 1 was removing it! McAfee was ok at the start, but like Norton, it became bloated and pretty much put a choke collar on my computer :) I use AVG Free now and Kerio Personal Firewall (now Sunbelt Firewall) and have never had any problems

hmmm...interesting Norton slows down with age? Right now it is snappy. I will have to keep an eye out. I have 2006. I understand 2007 is out and is reported to have fixed the slowdowns of older versions.. Well time will tell.

I haven't read this entire thread so spare me if this has already been mentioned....but your best bet for virus protection is avast. I've been using it forever and every single person who I have recommended to has been nothing but completely satisfied with its performance! Trust me, you won't regret getting avast! (I sound like a salesman haha)

oh yeah the most used question " which antivirus should i install?"
i experienced norton and kaspersky both. norton is a crap since it doesnt see many viruses untill it crashes and says too many viruses..
kaspersky internet security is a crap too. that program scans everything like hell ! it scans every email , every message and every archive file which i run. it drives me crazy poping up in the lower right corner... and after all i was looking for a cure of a program and went in notorious sites. i got virus there and i had to reinstall windows.
now i can proudly say that i dont use any antivirus program so my machine is as fast as it is running a few processes.
i put deep freeze which freezes the whole drive as it is clean and recovers it on every restart and the system is like brand new.
