part of dell's menu is antivirus software (free)

i'm abut to buy 1530 and need maximum security,
no parental control needs, and minimum maintenance.

    any suggestions?

    thanks,

Both suck AVG and Avast are FREE and miles better than those paid (in your case free) solutions.

They are bloat infested memory hogs who actually aren't that good at detecting anything.

I personally use Avast its got a good detection rate and updates itself 3 times a day and has a very low memory footprint way less than AVG and its free counterparts.

Just randomly select one and download avast for free...it has lk 7 different kinds of protection real time. It's a very nice program :)

AVG and AVAST are the two best anti-virus programs for free, and take up much less space.

If you had to pick between all of those, just grab the Trend Micro. Its the best of the bunch and its free, so why not. Good to have.

I second Trend (IF YOU HAVE TO PICK ONE). But Avast is the best free solution in my view and experience.

Really Trend is not bad, it could be helpful for a relative who needs support for the application. AVG, AVAST will not offer support. And its not tied to a Dell I think as they give you the CD Key and disc.

My new 1520 came with the 30-day trial of Trend, and I had so many problems with it that I killed it and installed AVG, and have had no problems since.

I like AVG a lot - easy interface, auto updates, etc. - but I actually tried avast first. Installed it on my desktop but it didn't play nice with the ZoneAlarm firewall, so I switched to AVG and no problems since.

I've also heard good things about Avira antivirus and also the Comodo firewall.

AVG gets very mixed reviews from "it's great" to "don't go near it" yet McAfee and Norton seam to always get fairly good reviews, I've never used AVG personally but Norton is absolute rubbish and McAfee is ok but does seam to give you system a bit of a performance hit. So what's with these reviewers? Makes you wonder who's payroll they are on....

Not seen it mentioned so far, but NOD32 has one of the best detection records in the industry. It is also very effecient and light weight.

Worth a look, but it's not free.

    It's personal choice.

All these people are bashing Norton and the others when in fact on average they get much better reviews then all these free programs.

I've used Norton for many years and have yet to have any problems with it. I'm currently using NIS 2008, and it is a VAST improvement over anyother version.

Using it, I have never noticed any obvious performance hits cause by Norton. My startup time didn't get slower after installation.

Norton would be a very viable choice in computer security.

I had McAfee on the 1721 I just sent back and got the BSOD several times. Uninstalled and used avast and no probs, however its alert is really loud and scared the c**p out of me the first time I heard it. Now with my new 1530 I chose trend and I heard that is good so I will give it a try. Used Norton for years with no trouble just wanted to try something different I guess.

    Trend..? TrendMicro?

In my opinion, whatever you do.. don't choose Norton! I am running Norton Internet Security 2007 on my laptop and I was infected with multiple worms and other viruses, despite Norton still saying my machine was secure. I never knew I was infected until I ran the system scan at TrendMicro.com.

I think you'll be better off with McAfee but I have read good things about Avast. Best part is.. that I heard it was free.
