This may sound kinda stupid, but I was wondering why some people leave there notebooks on all the time.Is there a benfit to this or is it just personal choice.

it's a lifestyle choice you could say... Though some people claim that turning on a computer is a strain on the electrical circuits and what not, i don't believe it. my laptop's just always docked at my desk

Some people hate boot up times right when they get out bed and want to check their email, is a possibility perhaps.

I know that I leave mine (Inspiron 1000) on at night for torrent uploads/downloads occasionally but the fan can be annoying so I try to keep it off when I can.

I left my laptop on all the time . I've read some info about desktop magazine they said that if you use your computer most of the time, just leave it on. Turn off/on often may decrease the life of the machine. I have no clue?!?!

What I do with my desktop is leave it on all day and then turn it off when i sleep..
I'll probably do the same thing with my laptop, just keep it on standby whenever im not using it.

It's fine if you leave it on all day but you might want to maybe restart it sometime during it that time. Will help refresh the ram and resources.

I remember I left my desktop computer on for 4 days (dowloading 4 DVD movies) and when I got back it froze. I think it was a ram problem.

Its the virtual memory. If you leave your system on for days at a time it will get very very low. That mean performance drops in everything. I sometimes leave mine on overnight, mabey 2 days while its sitting on my desk. But if its been on overnight and I want to play a game I always restart it just to get all the resources refreshed.

I leave mine on pretty much all the time, well, i take it you mean in Standby mode?

When im done using it i just close the lid and open it when i want to use it again and it starts right up.

It is a convenience in time thing for me. Obviously i reboot the machine at least every day or 2nd day to freshen things up.

Also, sometimes in standby when i open it up it doesnt connect to the wireless connection so i have to reboot then too, which happens quite alot.

I hibernate my notebook everytime so that it boots up in about 4 seconds.

I do have a notebook that I keep on all the time though, but it's for a server, and I doubt that everyone is running servers.

    hello,

Since we are on this topic, my Inspiron 6400 doesn't go into standby mode when i close my cover/lid. I know I chose that option in the power option. I looked around the laptop and don't seem to find a sensor, knob that senses if the cover is closed or not. Is that normal?

    Thanks.
