Sorry if this question was asked already, but after hours of searching I am a bit tired.
What program is good to measure how hot my notebook gets? E1705. Thanks

I use I8kfangui. Works perfectly here, you can both 'observe' the temperature and also control the fans.
-
Yeah, 18kfangui works well, also NHC moniters various temps and offer other features.
-
yea, i use NHC. and i think HDtune gives you just your hard drive temp
heres a link to NHC -

Are these programs really needed and do they really work?

ScifiMike12 Drinking the good stuff
NHC monitors heat and also optimizes performance. I8kfanGUI is great for monitoring CPU,GPU, and chipset components and adjusting fan speeds to cool them.

Thank you all for the prompt replies, you guys are champs.
One more question, currently my temps read as follows...
CPU
37C
Peak 47C
GPU
60C
Peak 76C
Memory
43C
Peak 48C
Chipset Temp
46C
Peak 46C
Harddrive
35C
Peak 35C.
This is without hardcore gaming... do these temps seem far fitched? -
That seems ok to me except for the GPU. I have the same problem with my M90, the GPU is always hot! I set the I8kfangui to start the CPU fan on 34C and set the GPU fan to be on all the time (on the slow speed). It seems that the GPU never goes below 40C. Here are my temps:
CPU 34C - 41C
GPU 43C - 49C
Memory 39C - 44C
Chipset 41C - 42C
HDD 32C - 32C
If you are not worried about the battery, I'd suggest that you set the fans to work on slow speed all the time and switch to fast when the temp goes above 50C. You would barely here the fans. -
I agree with Sam, GPU temps seem high in your case. You can always buy a notebook cooler. Do you have it overclocked? or is it the 7800?
-
18kfangui is what many people use -

The E series inspirons are supposed to be very quiet and cool. I have the I8Kfangui and my temps in degreees farienheit are pretty good. After installing it I felt that the bios was doing a well enough job that I deleted the program. You may want to talk to dell and make sure you dont have some underlying issues. Our notebooks are designed to run cooler and with less fan noise. Do you know of any unfriendly CPU/GPU processes running in the background?

To answer the person who asked the question.. No its not overclocked, its the 7800
. Think I can complain to get it upgraded?
