I'm thinking of buying an E1505, and I've seen many on here and on other forums say they buy it with the minimum memory available, and then buy another memory unit separately.
I've been going through newegg.com (is there a cheaper/better place?) to look for memory prices, will any ddr2 533 chip fit ? and what brands do everyone buy ?
Btw, is it complicated to install ram in a laptop ? I'm a bit new in that area....

You can also check out zipzoomfly.com

The reason you should buy seperatily is that Dell charges outragously for the extra RAM. Well you can buy any PC-4200 DDR2 533Mhz RAM.

The brands to stick with for quality purposes is OCZ, Corsair, Kingston, Crucial. Those are great brands. I myself went with Transcend (Samsung).

Not hard to install, you just need to take off the RAM cover on the bottom of the laptop, pull out the old ram and stick in the new. Or just put in the new stick.

    Hope this helps.

    Yair,

The base E1505 comes with a single 512MB SODIMM. This is very handy inasmuch as you only need to purchase another 512MB SODIMM to get to 1GB RAM. If you want 2GB, then you'll need to "discard" the installed SODIMM and add 2 - 1GB SODIMMs, only two DIMM slots.

Dell provides a small memory lid on the base. One screw its off and the 2 DIMM slots are exposed. It will take your BIOS longer to recognize the added RAM than for you to install it.

    Thanks for the info.
I'll probably configure the E1505 with the 512mb SODIMM and get another 1GB afterwards then, should cost the same as getting a 1GB SODIMM from Dell, if not less.
I was only planning to buy it in July/August, but if they release a dedicated GPU option while the $750 coupon is valid I might be tempted.

I've got another "Dell question", I figured I might as well put it here instead of opening a new thread.
I noticed that in the Dell online store, there are 4 different set ups of the E1505, with different prices, but I can customize all of them with the same parts, and the base unit will be cheaper, where is the difference in prices coming from ? is the warranty level that factor ?

No, most people pay more for those choices...I don't know why it is more expensive, but I always build from the base. :) I haven't tried it lately, but it was the same thing when I was configuring my I9300. :)

Could be cost of convience. :)

I configure from the base option as well, I was just afraid I'm missing something...
Managed to configure a 2GHZ Dual core,100gig 7200HD, 512gig ram (+80$ 1gig stick later), cd/dvd burner, bigger battery, remote+tuner, and Ultra Wide something something screen (most expensive screen option basically) for 1350$ (after 750 off and adding the extra 80 for the 1 gig stick).
If they had a different GPU option I'd probably buy it now, more than 6 months before I actually need it.

when you buy a computer from dell, and then install your own RAM into it, does that void your warranty?

No, it does not void your warranty, but it is not covered under your warranty, so if your new RAM goes out, Dell will not replace it.

It is considered a user upgradable component.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi All,

I just wanted to ask what kind of memory pins does Inspiron e1505 support? Is it 200 or 240 pins or could be both?

    Thanks!

    E1505 supports the following.

    PC-4200 533Mhz DDR2 200-pin SoDIMM
    PC-5300 667Mhz DDR2 200-pin SoDIMM

240 pin is for DDR2 in a desktop.

    Hope this helps.

yes and if you buy your 2GB of ram from the DELL PARTS area its cheaper and faster Ram..the Ram option you have when you buy your laptop is more expensive and 533Mhz..if you stick with the standard ram when you buy your laptop then go to the DELL PARTS area for your ram youll actually be saving money abd your Ram will be the faster 667Mhz.. if that doesnt make sense ..not sure why they do that!!
