What do most of you use for a notebook stand? Do you buy one? Make one? Or use whatever is handy? For the longest time, I was using a TV tray stand. Worked pretty good, but looked kinda cheap and flimsy with the awesome XPS, so I made one using bar stool legs with swivel top and cabinet door for the top. It's sturdy and looks neat and a whole lot cheaper than those $80-$150 stands I was looking at. I painted my XPS so I figured why not make a notebook stand!
Once again, I changed my notebook stand. I got this at a yard sale, took it home and refinished it.

I have a lap and an old year book.
-
My heat-proof thighs
Btw, good job on the stand, look good, shoulda gave a little more room for the mouse of your's, i dont use a mouse.. -
9 cell battery works great for a stand from what I've heard. Typically with my 12.1 inch tabet I just use my E1505 as the stand when its around. (No offense to the E1505 of course.)
-
I hope you two guys who use your lap allow the notebook vents to breathe and the intake vent is at the bottom.
-
Spread your legs when you sit. Thats all. XD
The 9-cell battery is good too. They also sell cooling pads that also work quite nicely. -
I don't use one...I use my lap or my desk
-
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
I've never had a problem with just keeping my machine(s) on a hard, flat surface. Annoyingly, the desk in my dorm has a ridge in the back that I need to pass cables over, so my current notebook stand consists of a rolled up piece of cardboard. Doesn't really help with cooling, but it does get my cables over that damn ridge.
If I've got the same crappy kind of desk next year, I'll probably get a proper stand. -
I have been using this for the last two years:
-
I don't use one. The trick is to sit it in such a way that the airflow passes between your legs.
If I did though I figure a folder/ring binder would do the trick. Using the rings as a kind of cable managment and with regard the M1330 maybe sitting/fixing a hub inside the ring binder underneath the M1330 for port expansion out the sides.
You could even cut some slats in the binder to allow the air to pass through but I guess with all four legs on the flat surface the airflow will be like-for-like with a desk surface anyway. Only angled.
I think the concept has a lot of scope for interpretation and customization. You could even keep your manuals in it. It also benefits from being ridiculously simple and outrageously inexpensive. -
My M1730 (nice hot-running machine that it is) sits on my normal computer desk with a DVD case wedged at the rear to increase airflow. I occasionally put the machine through days of continuous operation and it's not crashed on me yet.
-
I don't have one. But if I did, I would get the Logitech Alto Connect.
-
Looks stylish though. -
I wanna get a thermal pad, anyone know where I can get one of those? or can I make my own. cardboard/aluminum?
-
I use the Staples metal monitor stand. It's $20.
Since it's metal, it's cold to the touch (before I have the M133O running on it for an hour or so), and it's "perforated" as well, so I think this works well for heat dissipation purposes since the metal acts as a heatsink and the perforation holes allow for the heat to be directed downward into the air beneath it. -
I use the Levenger Lap Desk. It does get a little warm because there's no padding under it, but it's great for laptops.
-
Just bought this one from Dell.....
Only $11 bucks so I figured I would give it a shot. -
-
If I`m sitting in bed, I use the smaller box that shipped with my laptop. The one that had the cds, ear buds etc. works great and costs nothing. Since it`s a flat surface airflow isn`t a problem.
-
........... now you know why I built my own. -
Nice work. But that doesn't leave you with much room for the mouse to move
-

This is what I use:
-
-
I use a Belkin Cushtop
Soft enough to be comfy, but rigid enough so it doesn't smother the heat vents (I have the 9 cell battery M1530 so theres lots of room for air to move around)
Great for sitting in bed, on the floor or on a chair! -
I use an old chair with arms and a beer case.
-
-
-
I use a TV tray.
-
I use an old '69 stingray cupholder, lol. Because mustangs are worth soo much more
-
I use a 1.99 IKEA cutting board (& a 9-cell battery pack).
Naturally the cutting board's black to match my 1330's tuxedo-black finish...
As a backup I use my Desalto Lifter. -
ok no joke,... i havea belkin one. it has a curved design that allows your laptop to breath MUCH better even when not running. it has curved design and a single fan it cools my laptop well, i dont have any monitoring software but, i tried riva tuner and it was running at 65 degrees after 3 hrs of crysis
it is a strudy and well bulit cooler i have a part # from newegg....

thats the part number from newegg....its a truly good coller.

i got mine from circutcity on special for 19 bucks -
I use one of these: http://www.xpad4laptop.com
Simple and effective.

I started this post for notebook STANDS and somehow it is now notebook coolers...
Oh well... I guess that counts.
Since we're now on notebook coolers, I use a targus chill mat with two 3" fans. You can barely see it here.
So, let's see them all, stands, coolers, laps.... -
Lord Egregious Notebook Evangelist
This is a great thread. I never though much into a notebook cooler till my uncle told me of all the problems he's dealt with while repair laptops. I'm looking for something not that noisy since I'm moving away from my monster of a desktop that sounds like a jet plane at all times but at least it doesn't overheat ever.
-
After my exams I'm going to make a stand with two silent 120mm fans for my yet to arrive m1530
P.s In the first post I thought jack was using a broken XPS m1530 as a stand for his m1530... Turns out its a mirror
I need more sleep..... -

Nice stand mattocs
I think I'm gonna have to get a nice dell monitor to replace my 20" sceptre.
-
I read once that some person used erasers on each corner to lift up his/her laptop to allow for airflow, so that's what I'm going to do xd
-
-
My photo's posted were only showing the stand and not the cooling method. This shows what I'm using to cool the XPS which tends to run hot.
I use the raised bubble pad under the targus cooling pad so there is good air flow under that... then the 9 cell battery which lifts the notebook over a inch increases the air flow between the fans. Good setup.
-
I like the other user here uses the Belkin CushTop
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/...etail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=A1125991
Works really well if you are laying in bed / couch or sitting on the floor. Otherwise I just use whatever desk or other table is near. -
Im using http://www.table-mate.com/html/index.php which is pretty nice sitting in my recliner...except I cant recline...Now if it swung around from the side, I could recline, that would be nice. When wanting to recline though, I have a belkin cushtop too.
Im really debating on getting one of those notebook coolers. The 8400m gs and higher are really decent for gaming. I personally have a vostro 1400 and its a beast! Dell misadvertised them as gddr2 when they are really gddr3. I was able to OC it (not permantently, just messing with settings) from 500/600 (GPU/MEM) default clocks to about 700/1000mhz! So, perhaps Ill be looking into one of them new fangled gizmagadget cooler thingamabobs.

A little off topic...anyone know if Dell is still having issues with the grainy screens they were shipping last year? thx -
LOL, this sounds dumb but I'm using the cap from a flash drive to prop up the back of my laptop after I noticed it getting pretty warm.
I do have this: http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=380915 but the pads that are on the bottom of it don't raise the laptop far enough to prevent the vent on the bottom from touching the fabric. So I stand the cap on it's end and put the back edge of the laptop on it.
I really should get a proper stand.... -
They don't have it in RED though...
If you get a 9 cell battery, you will have the air flow under it and I like that on mine. I don't know if you can get that battery with your Dell Latitude D630 though? -
I bought a Lapinator on ebay after reading about it on CNET. I love it, very light and small enough to put in your backpack, keeps the heat off of your lap, rubber feet keep the notebook from sliding at any angle, it's very comfy on the lap but not bulky. It's a simple little holder but it works really well, especially if you like to use your computer while laying down.

iLap
Comfortably padded and lightweight -
Notebook stands? What do you use?
