Ok, I know I post alot and I should be knowledgeable on this but im not. Maybe I could search the forums and find my own anwsers, but I've anwsered plenty of peoples questions when the answer was just a google away.

When I get my M1530 I plan on putting Ultimate 64x on it. I know there is something about the ACHI driver and I think it needs to be installed during the installation of Vista, how do I acomplish this. Are the 32x and the 64x drivers the same?

What are the benefits of going 64x besides the ability to use another GB of ram.

The AHCI driver for x64 is different than the one for x32. So you will need to first download the driver for x64. From there, you copy the driver files to a folder in a USB FLASH drive. After that, begin reformatting your computer using vista 64 bit media. After the partitioning phase, there will be a button labeled "load driver." Click it, and select the driver you put on the USB FLASH drive. It will install the AHCI driver, and then vista will commence installation.

It cannot be installed with a CD-R. There are ways to install it using a USB drive.

Vista x86 and x64 has AHCI drivers already.

This is a little of an odd question, but rather than starting a new thread here seems like a good place to ask it. A while ago someone created a thread that went over how to do the clean install with 64-bit Vista on the 1530 and it was mostly based off of Les's clean install. It also had a link to all the x64 drivers that you'd need for the 1530. Anyways the question is, can anyone find this thread? I've been looking but coming up empty.

Read this for obtaining the latest drivers and extracting them to the flash drive...

    actually, that not quite right...........

vista x64 can support up to, what is it, 128GB ram, depeding on the version. Even most major mobo's only support 8GB right now....

The most important benefit, imo, is the implementation of ASLR.. Address Space Layout Randomization. This is what has made OSX immune to most remote exploits.. MS has only included this in the x64 version, while most Linux kernels as well as OSX have it from quite some time...

on the 1530 driver is needed. I installed ultimate 64 bit on my computer with achi without needing a driver(dell xps 410)? Is it because of the newer chipset?

It is working in ATA mode nonetheless.. I made the same mistake once, but once I ran a couple of benchmarks(boot times), it was evidently not under AHCI..

If the AHCI enabled drivers show up on Device Manager(under storage controllers), and you have the enable advanced performance setting under the harddrive properties, you are set.

I am sure I installed AHCI drivers during my 64-bit install. However I didn’t know I had to check this checkbox. I just did and then click ok but it keeps getting unchecked on its own.. What am I doing wrong ?

    EDIT:

I just noticed that under Enable write caching option there is a note saying: This device does not allow write caching setting to be modified. Any ideas ?

I have the mode set to AHCI in bios. Should I also change the acoustic mode from Bypass to Performance ? It’s the only thing I can think of at the moment. Please advise !

I was thinking something in your BIOS. Yeah, on my Inspiron, I have performance set on my HDD accoustics, since my typing is actually louder than anything else on my laptop. Try it and see if the setting shows up.
