Where is the best place to get these drivers from? If Nvidia, do I just download "Geforce 8 Series" drivers or what.. and 32 or 64-bit vista? (whats the difference between those two and how do you switch it?)![]()
Thanks a bunch.

Just download the 32 bit drivers for GeForce 8 series, 64 bit is for 64 bit Vista (or XP Pro) which you most likely do not have.

edit: these seem to be only for desktop chips, can't find anything on nvidia.com for the 8600m. Looks like they have to come from Dell or a modified driver. Pretty lame. -
-
for me it says nvidia setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware
awkward. :\ -
-
Dell's 8400m driver works for 8600gt so you have to download it from dell's website
-

We can't use the drivers from NVIDIA, I just ran NVIDIA's 'detect drivers to use tool', and get this message "Dell requires that you download the driver for your GPU from their support site."
-
NVIDIA's website only has drivers for desktop graphics cards. For mobile cards, you need to get the drivers from the manufacturers site (in this case Dell), or get modded one.. such as www.laptopvideo2go.com

Hi can you give the link from where u downloaded
8400M WinXp 64bit driver from dell website
and which u say also works for 8600M
mine is 8600M , and i installed WinXp 64bit , hoping this will be faster
then the Xp home 32 bit , but with graphic driver, its sucks -
Laptop drivers need to have the inf files modified for the specific hardware profile.
Go here http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ you'll likely find what you need. -
I suggest using Dell's drivers with the 8600M right now because the drivers from laptopvideo2go caused my laptop to be unable to wake up from sleep, as soon as I went back to Dell's driver the computer wakes up fine.

I had some problems with the laptopvideo2go drivers as well. I originally had the 163.15 drivers and I thought it was working well. Then my system started hanging so I tried 162's and Top Spin 2 started crashing on loading. I ended up uninstalling/reinstalling 163.15 a few times and now it seems stable.
Although before I returned my inspiron 1520 I was playing Top Spin 2 and Call of Duty 2 and the graphics were a lot smoother (installed 162.xx) than with my Vostro 1500 right now so I'm not too convinced these drivers are the best available. -
currently the problem with me is
that i reinstall Xp-64bit and
now , I am not able to find
8600M driver for Xp-64bit any where
then i thought to again reinstall Xp 32 bit home
which i got with my dell, but my Cd reader stopped working
i called dell and did a lot of pain ass things and then they said
they will send a new dvd drive,
now, I got msg that the dvd drive is back order and it will take a week to come
so basically, I am not able to use my new new new vostro
for another 1 week(
if, any one knows where to find driver for xp 64 bit for 8600M then do let me know
thanks -

The problem that I have is when I try to run Bioshock, I can install it but after the first cinematic plays and the first level tries to load, the game crashes. I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 with 4 GB of memory and the 8600M GT card, any ideas?

The modded ones at http://www.laptopvideo2go.com work perfectly for me. I use the 163.44 drivers (BIOSHOCK) for Vista 32bit. I have not had a single crash and performance has went up quite a bit. If you did a bit deeper on these forums you'll find plenty of guides on how to install the modded drivers, and there is also a guide right on www.laptopvideo2go.com.

163.15 is awesome for me....dont use Dell's drivers, they suck!
-
I'm using Laptopvideotogo 163.14 drivers with no problems on a Vostro 1700.
Video & games look great. Text looks pretty crappy, though (and it's not just the monitor - looks the same on other LCDs). Hoping future drivers will improve the situation.
