    Received mine yesterday.

    It's beautiful.

Came with everything that was ordered.
    Screen is bonza quality.
Taking a bit of getting used to Vista.
Will be attempting to set up a dual boot with XP sometime soon.

Would I be better off slipstreaming the SATA drivers into the XP CD, or is changing the setting in the BIOS to ATA fine (ie no noticable performance drop)?

Then, at an even later date, I'll have a play with vLite to cut some stuff out of Vista. Bloat begone! :p

I'm still stunned that this system is more powerful than my trusty desktop. Better CPU. Better graphics. More RAM. More HDD space. Better screen. Oh so very very nice ^_^

Not 180 degrees ... but maybe 160-170 degrees.

Are you going to hang it on a wall? :D

In fact, yes, I am thinking of building a wallmount instead of stand. I wish I have a digital cam to take a photo..

BTW, is the 1720 LCD screen protected by a piece of glass?

    Thank you very much.

Wow .... ok ... so how will you type?

You can hang it so the keyboard is eye-level from your standing
or sitting position .... or .. you can use a wireless keyboard and
mouse and mount the laptop in an upside-down position and rotate
the video via software (display settings).

Yes ... the true-life display is (or is like) glass.

    netwerkz101,

A usb hub will be connect to keyboard and mouse while only one use wire connect to the notebook (bluetooth in the future) :D . Since you mention the notebook open about 160-170, I will adjust the backframe accordingly.

The backframe is like this ===> I_I <=== and two fans mounted on a piece of wood (5 inch away from the notebook) will be sucking or blowing air. This design will give space for the notebook to breathe.

I am wondering, does the 1720 blow air out or suck air from bottom? With this information, I think I can finished it before my notebook come.

    Thank you very much.

Interesting. I hope you post pics of final product.

it sucks air in from the bottom and exhausts out the left side.

Hi can anyone in Australia please let me know what you think of the screen quality. Also can you please let me know what the screen is...

Go to Device Manager => Monitors => PnP Monitor (or whatever the monitor is) => Details => Hardware IDs dropdown and let me know what it says there...

    eg Dell 2707FPW says DELD013
    eg Samsung says SECxxxx
    eg LG says LPLxxxx

Also anyone run any games can they post benchmarks or just their thoughts on how well it's running certain games?

I don't expect to run latest games at the native res (I would be getting 1920x1200)

    Lee - I have a SEC3258 @ 1440x900
I believe the quality to be astounding, though viewing angles leave a little to be desired (But I can cope with that).
Games that I've tried thus far (HL2, CoD2, Doom3) have all run like a dream.

Bringing back this thread from the dead... Mine's got an EDD of 11/05... It was in "boxing" stage the 26th, so it might ship sooner then that (2nd day shipping). Stats are in sig, I'm waiting with bated breath. I'll be trying to dual-boot XP and Vista.

That squealing when you plug in headphones is really starting to get on my nerves! Does it mean I have a defective laptop or is everyone's like that?

The headphone jack noise seems to be a problem across the whole range. I think I read somewhere that other brands had troubles with it also.

Hi all; I just got a Vostro 1720 at work: I work with graphics as part of my job in marketing. I noticed my screen was a bit grainy, but thought "them's the breaks". but I noticed that a side effect of the grainyness was certain graphics show discolouration.

As a professional using the machine for work and doing graphics, the colour change is unacceptable.

Attached is a shade of 'beige-y-green' that turns VERY green near the left edge of my samsung 3155 screen. They going to try replacing the motherboard (I don't care I'm going on vacation, onsite service will take care of it) but if that doesn't solve the problem, they'll do a whole new build for me (when just picking the screens properly would probably do).

You may find this specific shade exposes the problem in a way that no technician can argue with. I suggest if others have graphics that highlight the problem, they be posted, too.

    black, 2g, 8400 (soon will be 8600) dual 250 gig hd's

do your self a favor, and get the better video card, itll save you in the long run.
and in my opinion do a clean reinstall of the vista and media. it will speed up your system, and saves you bunch of HD space..

Did I get a Good Deal?

I Just oredered a refurbished Dell Inspiron 1720 through the Dell Outlet. This is my first Dell purchase ever.
    Order details:
    Inspiron 1720 Notebook: Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 (2.2GHz/800Mhz FSB/4MB cache)
    90W AC Adapter
8X DVD +/- RW w/dbl layer write capability
Genuine Windows Vista Ultimate Operating System Label
    Remote Control for Media Center
    Dell 1505 Wireless-N
Sound Blaster Audigy ADVANCED HD Audio Software Edition
    9 Cell Battery, Primary
    4 GB DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz (2 DIMMs)
    Bluetooth Wireless Card 355
250 GB EIDE Hard Drive (5400RPM)
Integrated 2.0 Mega Pixel Web Camera
17 inch WXGA+ TrueLife Glossy Notebook Screen
    256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT

I paid $1,319.00 + tax. Got free shipping. I couldn't find any outlet coupons. Has anyone purchased any refurbished 1720? Is there anything I need to be aware of or look for when it arrives? Currently, a new configured 1720 is over $2,100.00 after $314 savings. Is this a good deal?

    Thanks.

I'm a little late to the party but I love my 1720. My screen says: MONITOR\AUO3787

The weird screen type thing I talked about in my thread doesn't really bother me considering I can barely see it and my screen looks amazing. It's 1440x900 btw.

What is the general concensus for reinstalling Vista to remove Dell bloat? IS that something that most of you do or don't do? Are any of the Dell programs useful? Do any of the programs come back with the reinstall?

Thanks for all the 1720 posts - mine is on order in the boxing stage.

    hi all..

anyone here go from a e1705 to the 1720?
my old system is in my sig and heres my new system
    2.2 4mb 800mhz
    160 7200 rpm hd
    8600M GT
    2 gigs ram

on paper i have a better system, and after a format and installation of vista ultimate, windows updates, drivers, and office this computer LAGS.

so far im not impressed and im wondering if i could have messed up the install somehow.
Im going to give it another format and reinstall. so far i like my e1705 better from a performance standpoint.. but the 1720 sure looks better and seems better built.

    thoughts?

I got this cause the vostro 1500 I bought got stolen, I bought the vostro for $636 (shipped) and the insurance company priced it at $1599! This Laptop cost $1596 shipped(including tax) I'm probly not even going to open this but just turn around and sell it and then buy a penryn vostro(when they arrive) with a 8600 GT, BTW anyone know if inspiron gets the DDR3 8600? I know vostro doesn't and xps does. So anyway if you want a nearly maxed out, monster inspiron, pm me. If I don't sell it I'm going to undervolt the penryn(anyone done that?) and dual-boot it with XP Pro(I think there's a good thred on this).

Anyone know how good the screen is?

Aight, I'm done rambling -ENIO(excited new inspiron owner)

I was the same, but I find the silver keyboard quite handy as the light from the screen reflects on it so I don't need to have a light on at night so much!

    Hello all,
I'm getting ready to order a 1720 and was wondering if anyone could help me with my screen choice? I will not be watching any HD stuff on it and really don't need 1900x1200 but poor quality screens really bother me so I am curious how good the standard glossy screen is....any thoughts?

    Thanks

Ordered myself a 1720 :D can't wait for it to get here. (the EDD is like 31/03/08  ) specs are in my sig.

@AKfaust, I've heard alot of people say the chances of getting an LG (non-grainy) Screen is increased if you get the 1440x900 res, plus if your gaming it's better to have a mid-class res as it's easier for hardware to run at a native resolution.

Thanks Zorg....I went with the standard 1440x900....but I did up the CPU to the 2.4 and it came with 3G of ram.....and of course I got the 8600 GT...but I thought it came with DDR3..? My build date is the 31st of march and talked them into free delivery to Alaska....HP does it after all.

I think it's just the XPS that comes with DDR3 in the Dell range, I didn't go all out on a processor because I'll probably get a better laptop next year or the year after that. Plus Dell can be extortionate with their prices, especially for RAM.

    1720, 4GB, 8600GT, GM965, Vista Home Premium 32 bit

Please post or refer me to clear, precise step by step instructions on how to upgrade this thing to VISTA ULTIMATE 64-bit. I did search and read a lot of related posts -like about switching AHCI to ATA in bios, Intel Matrix drivers, some freeware 64-bit drivers for NVIDIA ... and I am begining to freak out something will go wrong. Are these freeware drivers spyware free ?

Also please note they put chipsed GM965 _and_ NVIDIA card.
    I read GM965 has integrated graphics card, X3100 ?
Would it create any problems for upgrade ?

    Please somebody respond ... ;-)

I ordered my 1720 at the end of february and accidentally checked the option for the non-glare matte screen. I sent it back immediately. Besides the grainy look, colors looked very dull and washed out, and the backlight bleeding was very noticeable. Wasnt impressed with it at all. re-ordered with the glossy screen option (standard resolution), its due in at the end of the month.

I should be getting mine today.....it is coming way before they said it would so I would imagine they always overstate the shipping date. I will give you my thoughts on the rig and screen soon.
