Just installed Windows 7 64bit RC. Was a little bit worried about 64 bit. I do have a core2duo processor. Did a clean install over Vista 32 partition. I can report that everything went off without a hitch. I didn't need to find a single driver. Of note I have integrated graphics so I can't report on any Nvidia cards. Runs much much better than vista. I have 2GB of ram planning on getting more but I have noticed a surprising improvement in windows ready boost being utilized much better in Win 7. Using a 1GB microSD. Only change I have made is the default power managment is balanced. I changed it to High performance when plugged in.

Where do you find the latest drivers for Inspiron 1720? The DELL page has drivers as old as 2007.

The drivers may be old but they're still working well. Even along side with Win 7. So no reason to update them since there isn't any new ones coming from Dell.

Just keep updating your GPU drivers and get them from LV2G.

All I need was windows update and it helped installed everything from scratch on Win7 Ultimate x64. I didn't even get any single driver from Dell or from CD and everything works out of the box after the update. Thanks though.

There shouldn't be any problems. Win 7 by default comes with the AHCI drivers for your SATA operations. Just format the disks with while you're at the installation, select the drive where you want to install it, click next. Not a problem. Good luck.

Nah... I never tested it. Cos' I never used it. ;) I just want a clean computer - Windows 7 only, and only just Windows 7. So for me it ain't worth it. :) Win 7 startup time is fast I don't think it's a real problem though. Some people tried it I guess, so far so good.

I still love my Inspiron 1720. But I think I'm going to go to an Alienware M17X in the next few weeks. Still havn't ordered. Now I just need to decide if i'm going to sell my 1720 to offset the M17X costs, give it to my fiance since her laptop is dying, or give it to my brother. Problem is I'm in Iraq and don't want to ship it. Hmm maybe just carry it home when I go on leave. Thinking out load, or online rather. Just getting that itch for bigger and better. Although my 1720 is pretty decent...

I just ordered an inspiron w/ the core 2 duo 8700 processor, 4gb memory, 500gbhd and the media accelerator 4500hd. I have had an inspiron with the t7700 processor and the nvidia g85 card in it with a 320gbhd for 3 years now, the only issue I had was a bad drive, but I was driving around with it in my motorcycle trunk in sleep mode. The machine is awesome, I hope the new one, even with the less potent video card serves me as well. It's "in production"
