I am NOT a photographer. Dell has clear, sharp pics of the side of the machine (I couldn't really get any). Maybe you can tell how the bottom of the computer doesn't lay flat on the surface.

I think that "Pearl" design is more of the oyster shell.

I uploaded 6 images...not sure if they are going to show?

The lid color looks nice. I went back and forth between Kyoto Pearl and Rosey Future but decided to stay with pink. My 1720 is Flamingo Pink and my Mini 10 is Pink. I thought my color choices would keep everyone from wanting my laptops but it isn't working.

I'm glad to hear that heat hasn't been a problem. I loved the Studio XPS 1640 but after 20 minutes in a game the palm rest was so hot that I couldn't use it anymore. I had bought it for my husband but he refused to use it with the heat issue so he has the 1735. He's going to want a new one when he sees the changes they've made.

My original delivery date was Monday. Since it was delayed the order status number doesn't have any information available. I wish it would hurry up and get here!

Bukket, I do not do any gaming, so that probably has something to do with my machine staying so cool. But this model is designed differently on the bottom to keep the air circulating beneath it, so I would think it would be as cool as any other laptop used for gaming, if not more so.

Yeah, the pearl design is growing on me. :)

My power button on the 1737 stopped working. Good thing the media direct button still powers the computer on after I freaked out and pressed everything.

Just checked, I bougth this on 1/22/09 with a 1 year mail-in warranty.

Should I spend the money to ship it in for repair ... hmm ...

I just noticed a couple of people asking about the Studio 1745 getting hot. I have a brand new one received 1/5/10 (after a freakin' 54 day wait but I'm trying to get over it). I don't do a ton of gaming, and I use an external keyboard when it's on my desk (had it anyway and the desk sits a little high to use laptops... I do love the keyboard on it though), but I just got done running Fallout 3 (got it FREE from friend who couldn't load it on his computer... awesome) for about 90 minutes and the computer isn't too hot at all. The palm rest is a little warm, but by no means uncomfortable.

I do not use an external fan. In fact, the internal one didn't seem to be working too hard. I do have a pretty good system though (Intel Core Duo T9600 2.8GHz/1066MHz, 6 MB Cach; 4 GB Ram; 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650). Game ran great and like I said no overheating after 90 minutes. I think that while it's not a specific gaming laptop it can handle most fine.

I have the same setup you have, and mine doesn't get abnormally hot either. I've left it on for hours at a time, and yeah...it gets a little warm, but not HOT by all means. I do notice the fan kicking on a lot, and I don't play games at all on it.

Which btw...reminds me of something. Is there a guide yet showing how to dis-assemble the 1745?

I have an i7 version, and CPU does not go above 60-65 and GPU does not go above 60 during heavy gaming sessions (as heavy as Mass Effect, Fallout 3 and Dragon Age can do anyway).

They're sending me a box to pack it up and ship it back.
So I guess I won't have to spend anything for this little trip.
First time I have to warranty a dell ... hope my computer comes back safe and sound.

Anyone know if the "Intel HD Graphics" better than the "ATI 4650" card? I'm pretty sure the Intel is a new integrated graphics and isn't.

    Nope.. not even close.

The ATI 4650 1 GB is considered a "mid level" card.
    Intel HD Graphics-- well,...isn't.

However, if gaming is not your thing.. then the Intel should be good enough.

I updated the BIOS to A05 for my studio 1747 few days ago.
Running PC Wizard 2010, The READ frequency is 0.955 gHz, INSTEAD OF 1.7 GHz ??? while typing this.

    Anyone could comment on this?
Is the BIOS A05 reducing the clock rate this PC which is sold with specs at 1.7 Ghz on the DELL web site ???

Hi, I really would like to order a Dell Studio 17 - but the only thing that is holding me back is the screen resolution. How do you owners feel about the 900p screen?

It's a decent screen. It's not fantastic but it isn't bad either. The horizontal viewing angles are very generous. The vertical ones less so but I rarely, if ever (unless the screen is completely black), notice it.

It depends on what you will use the computer for. If you want to watch Blu-Ray films in full high definition or if you are into serious photo editing then the 1080p is the way to go. For a normal user like myself, who doesn't need full hd films and who uses the machine mostly for browsing, school work and games, the price difference between the standard screen and the 1080p is too much. It's a screen which may very well be quite pretty, but it is essentially useless for my purposes.

However, as a frank opinion, if I had that extra money to splash for style, I would get the 1080p.

I couldn't use it. It looked good while gaming but doing anything else killed my eyes. An hour of web browsing and email and I had to turn it off and go back to the LCD on my 1720. The viewing angles are terrible and it has a grainy brightness that just burns my eyes. I returned it after a couple of days.

It was my first LED screen so I thought that maybe I just couldn't use LED. But then I found the perfect system in the Outlet with the 1080p screen and bought it. I love it! This screen is amazing. Even at the brightest setting the text is crystal clear and easy on the eyes.

Start watching the outlet. They release the systems back to the list at 40 minutes past the hour and they disappear fast. When you put a system in your cart it is suppose to be released back to the list after 15 minutes but for some reason it isn't doing this. It makes it look like they don't have any available. But they will be there at the right time. The model number won't even be in the list until then. So do a refresh on the page. It took 2 days for me to get the laptop I wanted. But it was worth it!

Isn't it just because the computer is not being used - the whole point of i7? Sorry I'm not fully up-to-date on this stuff, and went with an HP instead, but my system also shows that same mark, but when I run a test as my computer is doing some stuff, my ghz shoots up to the max

Is there any option to control the fan speed in the S17 with i7-720QM and PM55 chipset manually via SpeedFan? Or to undervolt the CPU?

Received the SSD this morning, worried a bit about taking apart the laptop but neednt have - straightforward fitting and installation.

Windows 7 installed in 8 minutes and laptop now boots to desktop in less than 10 seconds. Satisfied!

Yeap, have the OCX Agility 120GB as primary in 1747 Studio and using 500GB as secondary, and the system is much more responsive.

Great News!!!!!Just so everyone knows, Dell has just announced it will now be sending out 130 watt replacement Power supplies worldwide for the 1747 to those who installed the A07 BIOS and are having heat issues with the 90watt PS that came with the Laptop, you need to contact technical support and they will process the replacement...... Please note they will send them out only to those who request one... so do not assume one will be arriving if you do not call....
I called right after the official release on the Dell forum here in the US, and my 130watt has already processed and shipped, it will arrive Friday......Also Dell states the current A07 BIOS will not allow the full usage of the 130watt PS but it fixes the current problem of a overheating power brick, a later BIOS update will allow the laptop to fully use the 130watt....

Congrats! Glad to hear the installation was easy.

One day I'll move up to an SSD but I love having the dual 500 gb drives for now.

Be sure to contact support and get your 130 watt adapter. Mine arrived today and I just plugged it in.

Are the new ones any better than the old ones with bad webcam and bad stereo speakers?

Um, yeah. The 1747 is a new model and everything is improved. I have a 1735 and a 1747 and they are nothing alike. Studio 17 is a model number and means it is the Studio line and a 17 inch screen. It is the number that comes after that tells you about the laptop.

If you bought it from Dell I would ask for a refund. If you bought it from eBay then you can still contact tech support and exchange your 90 watt adapter for the 130.

:D My 130watt power supply arrived this morning, Dell shipped it next day air, nice surprise, anyway after hooking it up and running BioShock 2 for about 2 hours I am happy to say the new power supply only got warm, where as the old 90watt would become to hot to handle...no more worries.....Thanks Dell.....

500gb HDD's actual formatted capacity is 465gb. The missing 14gb is probably your restore partition.

Good thing as the one 1747 (remember that from last year..) had speakers like that of my netbook and webcam was worse than my HP budget laptop.

The speakers on the 1747 are excellent. Nothing like the 1735.

Can't speak for the webcam since I don't use it.

Having a minor problem with the SSD.

If i leave the laptop unattended for more than 10 minutes the drive seems to go into sleep more and takes a good 20 seconds to come back to life causing win7 to freeze.

Ive scoured control panel and the drive properties but cant see to find anything to do with SSD standby mode.

I had yet ANOTHER engineer come around today (the 5th person in 2 months) to fix my webcam that mysteriously got broke with a replaceent screen... the webcam/mic didnt work, he replaced the webcam module and it works, but the mic does not... so I guess this means the mic is located elsewhere? I assumed it would be part of the webcam.. Anyone know? Well either way its something else I have to deal with (doesnt this get me a new laptop yet or what..)
