So I recently recieved my Dell Studio 17. The 1920 x 1200 screen is NOT backlit LED, but it is still absolutely beautiful although dim compared to desktop LCD's. Also, I am having a problem with my "L" key falling off. Also the volume up button is pretty unresponsive. Anyone else have these sort of problems? Also, who recieved a Media center remote mentioned in the review on this website. Mine did not have one.
Also, still wondering if anyone knows of a good laptop/slr bag for this computer...
Can anyone recommend a good laptop stand that allows one to use the laptop keyboard comfortably AND puts the monitor at a good height?

You have to order the remote.
-
Travel Remote
The one above will work but less buttons and more expensive than if you would have included the remote as in the original config. -
. Dell support said "the optical drive is properly cushioned for inserting a disc" so hopefully it'll be ok.
Anyone else got an opinion? -
I highly doubt it would scratch CDs, because if it did Dell would be forced to recall laptops.
-
I've not had any problems with CD/DVDs loading / ejecting and being scratched. I would assume they are using same/similar technology as Nintendo is with the Wii's as it is a similar load/eject. -

I just returned my DELL STUDIO 17 after spending about three hours on the phone with DELL, they came to the conclusion that it is impossible to install Windows XP on it. (Even before installing, XP pro quits with a blue screen and a Microsoft error message).
DELL stated to me that the layout of the actual mother board is causing XP to quit.
Te me this is really bad news because I do think that a PC compatible computer should accept the (still) most widely used OD out there. -

Hi all, I have a few questions before I make my actual order of this promising notebook:
- I read somewhere in this thread that the HDMI output doesn't do full HD resolution? Could someone verify this as I have a full HD LCD at home and would like to use it.
- Also, how loud is the fan when the CPU/GPU are under heavy load? I'm planning to play WoW on it.
- As I live in NL, we don't get the option for a backlit keyboard...
Is there any way to still get it as a seperate component?
Thanks!
(Maybe one of you US users with a backlit keyboard could report your KB as 'broken' and ask for a replacement... (I'll pay for the KB ofc)
-
I've heard that the S17 runs quietly compared to other notebooks in its class. So I don't think sound will be an issue.
-
That is not correct. You cannot order the DELL STUDIO 17 with windows XP. Dell does not support it at all and consequently does not even supply drivers for it. I don't know where you have that information from but I am sure that you cannot order a DELL STUDIO 17 with windows XP.
I think you might be mistaking the Studio 17 with a different model.
As I mentioned, I have spent almost 3 hours on the phone with DELL. Also, the STUDIO 17 doesn't even allow an XP installation. It stalls right at the beginning with a blue screen.
I might add: I have owned DELL laptops for over 5 years now and I do have quite some PC experience due to my work of 5 years with HP and my continued work with PC's and PC compatible PC's for over 20 years now. -
Here is one thread where the person has installed WIndows XP but is having a problem finding the soundcard driver: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=270228&page=3
Do a search there is more information in this. -
Hi all, I've just received my Studio 17 as well I thought I'd add my initial thoughts. 1920x1200 screen is stunning, definitely worth the extra I think, speakers are crap, on movies it seems like the background music is a lot louder than voices, this happened on all movies on different players, also had the crackly audio problem at loud volume but that was fixed using the disable wifi band thing, touchpad is crap as well, seems a little unreponsive even when you adjust the sensitivity, came standard with the tv tuner and remote, don't get very good reception though cos of my location, oh well.
Fans do seem to be kinda loud when they kick in, although I've never had a big laptop before, not too loud for me sitting in a quiet room though, otherwise it seems to be a good machine, plenty of grunt, will install some games and see how they go.

I think I might go for one of these. I've got a question or two though that I hope someone will be able to answer:
I'm going for the lowest model, and upgrading various bits. ('Good' on dell.com/ N0873501)
- I had a look at the review here, and it has a power USB port. Does this basic model have one? Do all models have the same ports?
- Has anone had any experience with running Ubuntu on the Studio 17? I saw one person got it up and running nicely, but that was some time ago, and I don't know if it was under Hardy Heron.
Thanks! -

Just ordered mine
the important parts are
Tangerine Orange
intel C2D 5750 2.0Ghz
3GB RAM
ATI 3650
1920X1200 screen
250GB HD
I'm a bit ticked because when I built the laptop yesterday I know the screen was a WLED but reading through the thread I double checked my order and the WLED is missing. I'm gonna call tomarrow and see if I can eather get the screen WLED or get a discount because they shouldn't be charging me the same for a lesser screen. -
Glossy widescreen 17.0 inch WLED display (1440x900) [add $125]
Hi Resolution, glossy widescreen 17.0 inch display (1920x1200) [add $150] -
I've also just ordered my Studio 17 (/cheer!)
I was even able to order the US backlit keyboard! (after trying different account managers)
I live in the Netherlands and the backlit kb isn't an option on the Dutch Dell site...
Can't wait to see the 1920x1200 screen in action with World of Warcraft
I allready started a different topic about NHC (Notebook Hardware Control software) and the Studio 17, but I guess it might be better to ask here aswell.
Since I have to wait a few weeks for my Studio 17, I'd like to make a headstart to attempt creating a custom ACPI file for NHC for the Studio 17, but I will need 2 dump files from this notebook.
Could anyone of you please run the following program (doesn't even install, just unzip and run it) to create the 2 files and send those 2 files to rkjswart at hotmail dot com? The files will be placed in the same directory where you run "AcpiObjectExplorer.exe" and they will be called "DSDT_DSDT.dat" and DSDT_DSDT.dsl".
You can download the .exe here: AcpiObjectExplorer

GOT THIS FOR $860..... -
Just received it, and booting for the first time. Anyone else have a little battery wiggle (9-cell)? So far it looks good, and the keyboard flex doesn't bug me as much as everyone complained about.
The touchpad feels a little sticky though, not as smooth and buttery as my Inspiron.
The right side of the palmrest feels awfully warm/hot to me.
While checking things out I got a pop-up: Ricoh MMC Disk Device Driver software was not successfully installed. -
I received mine yesterday, and I'm pleased with it. Everything I've chosen to run so far, especially my steam games, run beautifully. Aero is great and runs well.
Physically, the case is sleek. I do notice that the media buttons (volume, etc.) are slightly unresponsive, but still work most of the time. It's not a big worry to me.
-
I need to find a way to tweak the audio, because it is loads worse than my Inspiron.
-
I have had mine for a few weeks now. So far I have been very happy with it. It’s a huge jump in power from my 5 year old desktop.
These are the parts.
Studio 1735, Intel Core 2 Duo T8100, 2.1GHz, 800Mhz, 3M L2 Cache
Graphite Grey with Black U-Trim
4GB, DDR2, 2 Dimm
Back-lit Keyboard
Hi Resolution, glossy widescreen 17.0 inch display (1920x1200)
ATI MOBILITY RADEON HD 3650
320G 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
8X Slot Load CD / DVD Burner (Dual Layer DVD+/-R Drive)
Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy Advanced HD Software Edition $0.00
Dell Wireless 1510 802.11n Half Mini Card
Integrated 2.0M Pixel Webcam
Integrated Finger Print Reader
Dell Travel Remote Control, IR
Some things I’ve noticed:
I am starting to get little scratches on the top of the hinge. Where when the laptop is folded closed the hinge touches the main laptop. If this gets worse I will have to contact Dell.
The touch media controls are great but you can’t see them and they don’t light up with the keyboard. Hopefully this will be fixed in a future BIOS update.
The Audigy audio is a waste of money. Just a program. Not hardware. Don’t bother.
Vista really isn’t as bad as I thought it would be.
The 1920x1200 screen is amazing! Well worth it.
The touchpad is not good at all. Luckily I use a mouse most of the time.
The speakers are terrible.
So far no windows crashes. KEEP YOUR FINGERS CROSSED!!! -
I am not familiar with Vista myself, so I may be missing an audio setting. Even when the volume is low, the setting shows the sound jumping up and over the 'max' is there a way to change this?
The speakers and quiet, and weak quality.
I put them up to 30, and it sounds like the volume is going up and down and sometimes stuttering or popping. Only the first headjack seems to work for me, is this a setting or faulty? The sound is great through the jack, but very loud; I have to down it to about 15, half of the speaker setting.
Can you palmcheck your rest right of the touchpad? mine is burning hot. -
-
I have also noticed that about the audio. It sometimes sounds like its going up and down slightly. No popping. I have been trying to figure out whats causing it. -
Does this happen when using the headphones out?
-

WLED or not? That is the question. Dell needs to work on their typos. The 1920x1200 is not WLED, never was. The "build your dell" page never said WLED 1920x1200. When you view the configuration details, either after you buy it or while it's in your cart, you'll see 3 different items:
LCD Panel
Camera Module
LCD and Camera (non-displayed/transparent to cus)
This was where the typo was and still is. The part numbers are as follows:
320-6898 -> WLED 1440x900
320-6899 -> 1920x1200
and towards the bottom you'll see
320-6910 -> WLED 1440x900 w/ 2.0M pixel camera
320-6911 -> WLED 1920x1200 w 2.0M pixel camera
Part number 320-6911 is mislabeled. A look at the specification's guide confirms this:
WXGA+ TrueLife 1440x3(RGB)x900
WLED WXGA+ TrueLife 1440x3(RGB)x900
CCFL WUXGA TrueLife 1920x3(RGB)x1200
So they got the LCD descriptions correct but the LCD w/ Camera descriptions wrong. -
Amazing you can reply to posts before they're even posted
I just noticed the "320-6911 -> WLED 1920x1200 w 2.0M pixel camera" toward to bottom of the list and got excited, came here to make a post and you had already Answered the exact question I was about to post.
Your good.
Anyway I've read enough good things about the screen I'm getting that I'm not upset about it anymore. -
I have spotted some splotchy light on my screen, and the typical leak at the bottom. My 1705 had a nearly flawless display.
Also, my screen seems a lot brighter/higher contrast. Surfing familiar sites and seeing a totally new color is weird. -
Does anyone notice diagonal "scan lines" in their WUXGA display when there is a white color? For example, when I load the googe homepage this occurs on my screen. Please let me know. Thanks!
-
-
-
i think by reopening catalyst center (if you have an AMD grapics card), it gets rid of these lines. either way, it appears that this is likely a driver issue and not something wrong with my beautiful little (non-LED) WUXGA.
by the way, i called and complained about my screen not being WLED and they actually said they could replace it although this might take a week or two. i am pretty sure the guy did not know what he was talking about though... -
It also doesn't happen all the time. just occasionally. It was doing it last week and I restarted the laptop and it was back to normal.
I almost think its Mcafee scanning the laptop?? but haven't done enough tests.
I do think its a software issue. -
Well, just ordered my Studio 17. Now to play the waiting game... Although I requested it be delivered by the 1st September, which the guy confirmed several times, but on the quotes I've just been sent it says 12th September. Also, when are you meant to get your customer number? I've been sent 2 emails with various pdfs, but none have the customer number. Normal?
