What about a mini bluetooth USB dongle? OK, so it wont be as convenient, but at least you're not voiding your warranty.

opening up the back of the laptop to upgrade/add memory, hard drives or cards will NOT void your warranty.

in fact, there is alot you can do you your laptop that will not void your warranty - It might be usefull to read it.

I have a few questions in regards to the Dell Studio 17. I can get the laptop fully loaded at $1,244 in either of these configs:

1.) 56 Whr Lithium Ion Battery (6 cell), McAfee SecurityCenter with anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall, 30-Days, 2Yr Ltd Hardware Warranty, InHome Service after Remote Diagnosis

    OR

2.) 85Whr Lithium Ion Battery (9 cell), No Security, 1Yr Ltd Hardware Warranty and Mail In Service

Mind you, this is fully loaded excluding Blu-ray drive for DVD drive and the Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 (2.1GHz/800Mhz FSB/3MB cache) instead of the Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 (2.5GHz/800Mhz FSB/6MB cache).

Option 1 REQUIRES a security software option, and what I listed is the free option (bloatware to me, I rather load my own). It also features the 6 cell battery, but the better deal is the 2 year warranty InHome.

Option 2 does not require security software, because I would rather load my own anyways. It features the 9 cell battery but only a 1 year standard warranty as listed.

    Questions:

1.) I have everything plugged into a Backup UPS battery anyways (printer, modem, router, etc..), is the 9 cell option better than the 6 cell, like better air flow?

2.) Will the T8100 be good enough or is a T9300 really recommended? I want it to run fast and "future proof", but gaming is something reserved exclusively for my PlayStation 3. How vast is the real world differences we are talking here between the T8100 vs. T9300?

3.) Is the Sound Blaster Audigy Software Edition worth the extra $25, does it make that big of a difference, and does anyone know how much of an improvement on sound it makes (I know it is a software upgrade, not hardware)?

4.) I'm tied between Midnight Blue and Ruby Red for lid cover, what stands out more and what goes better with the system?

    1. The 9 cell battery raises the laptop a little and so would indeed provide better clearance for the air intake at the bottom of the laptop. :)

Bear in mind however, that the 9 cell battery is heavier than the 6 (suprisingly more than expected) and makes what is a perfectly luggable laptop into a beast to carry around with you. I love my Starbuck sundays too much to lug a studio 17 with a 9 cell anywhere.

    2. The difference in speed from the T8100 to the T9300 is not really noticable in general use and will only really affect you if you plan to play games a lot. It will get you a few extra frames in crysis but, that's pretty much it.

    3. No idea about the soundblaster software. Surely it would require a hardware upgrade too?

    4. The red definitely stands out more. I have ordered mine in tangarine orange as the red is slightly darker than I expected it to be (viewed one in PC World on sunday).

Hope that helps a little.

I've noticed when you put some pressure on the palm rest towards the edge of the computer its starting popping a tiny bit, obviously the top plastic isn't flush with the bottom plastic part, also I've started hearing the odd ticking sound coming from the top left of the keyboard, is that where the cpu is located?? I think the hinge is also slightly too tight, the screen seems flex a bit when opening and closing the lid, otherwise its cranking along nicely, just hope its built to last!!

Kensik: I'm not sure, but to be safe, I'd call and ask.

clintnz: Yeah, mine went pop on one side, a bit worrying. I haven't heard the ticking though - could it be the HD? Also, the outside lid seems quite flexible.

I just had a tech replace my screen. Had a LG with odd colors and loads of color banding. He put it in a Samsung and it looks a lot better.

    Hi,
I am not used to buy DELL computers. I would like to buy a Studio 17 for around 2000$ including a 400$ rebate (on the website). Is there any way to obtain an extra rebate (using coupons/calling directly Dell) ?

    Thanks for your help.

The 4 year warranty and complete care must have added a lot to yours. Here's what I ordered a few weeks ago (I paid KY 6% tax as well) it was $906 shipped

    Black
    2.16Ghz 2MB Cache Core 2 Duo
    3GB Ram
    256MB Radeon Video Card
    320GB 5400RPM HDD
    1440x900 LED Screen
    Backlit Keyboard
MS Office Home & Student Edition
    2Yr Warranty
    No Fingerprint Reader
    DVD+-RW
    Dell Wireless 1397
    Dell 355 Bluetooth

I think thats about it, it was purchased through the EPP program a few weeks ago with the 5% EPP coupon and 4% DPA discount.

Does anyone have an issue with the quality of sound? I have my basic 5-yr old Inspiron 8500 and it's sound is much better (deeper bass, louder, etc) than my new Studio 17 laptop. I did reinstall the driver but the sound hasn't changed much. Any ideas?

Don't think that will work as your notebook lid would also have to be replaced since your current model doesn't actually contain any white LED's...your model uses a inverter that wouldn't be easily replaced by LED's...

By the time you've bought a screen and inverter, that's almost the cost of a new laptop, assuming it'd even work which is unlikely.

Oh, and, hello! I'm the proud new owner of a 1735 which arrived a week or two back. I went with Dell largely for their system builder approach, so that I could spend money where I wanted to and save it on things I didn't want. I was looking for a desktop replacement machine with plenty of memory, a discrete graphics card and good hi-res screen. It doesn't have to be a "gaming rig" for bleeding edge games but I want it to throw about World of Warcraft without breaking a sweat. (-:

This is what I ended up with. Salient specs are:

    • Studio 1735 : Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 (2.0GHz,667MHz,2MB)
    • Display : 17in Widescreen WUXGA with Truelife - CCFL
    • LCD Back Cover : Jet Black Matte Finish
    • Memory Dual Channel 4.0GB (2x2048) 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    • Hard Drive : 160GB (1x160GB) Serial ATA (5400RPM)
    • Optical Drive : 8X DVD+/-RW Drive
    • Battery : Primary 6 cell 56W/HR LI-ION
    • Graphics: 256 MB ATI Mobility RADEON HD 3650
    • Wireless : Dell Wireless 1510 (802.11n) Half Mini Card European
    • Wireless : Dell Bluetooth 370 Card Europe
    • Keyboard : Internal UK English Qwerty Backlit Keyboard
    • Operating System : English Genuine Windows Vista SP1 Home Premium
Total price was 800 quid (GBP, pounds sterling, beer tokens, whatever).

I'll do a short review presently.

over the past weeks i spent about a 6 hours total on the phone with a dell EPP agent (my company has a dell EPP account) named Julio at extention 6127223. he was very nice and helped me out quite a bit (obviously).

the deal i started with was the Mike Ming Extreme edition found HERE. it is pretty loaded up with options that i wanted and comes with a sizeable instant savings. however, with my EPP, the instant savings was over $600.

I also had a 5% discount coupon from a promotion dell had in August, as well as my AAA 6% discount, as well as 4% from using my dell MPA account to buy it. My Dell MPA account has a high APR, but I will now just use my low APR credit card to buy that off.

i could not use all the coupons together, but i was able to negotiate the value of them from the price. keep mentioning that you i wanted certain aspects, such as a 7200 RPM HDD, but they didnt offer it, so ask for a free upgrade on software in place of it. also liberally throw in the words "i was looking at an apple".

i think the key is asking for free stuff where they can give it to you, like software and warranty. i was also able to get free next-day shipping.

he gave me so much money off of the price that i dont know what i actually ended up getting for free!

the price for my laptop without any savings or negotiations is $2,665 shipped, i got it for $1,499 shipped. i think i did pretty well.

be nice and courteous. if you think the salesperson you are working with is not going to give you the best deal, then hang up and call back to get a new associate.

i cant wait till i get it! i will be sure to post as soon as i do with some photos of the "seaweed" lid and other cool stuff. i think i am going to underclock it a little since i have been reading positive results with that.

nice system for under 1k for sure. but my system is pretty much a lot different than yours, so you cant really compare the prices. larger res screen, 9 cell battery, 4 years warranty, 4 years accidental/theft, 4 GB RAM, T8100 processor, "seaweed" artist edition lid, and 3 years of McAfee.

Does anyone have any experience with the Dell Video Chat? Just wondering some information about it. I know you can connect with people you know, but does it have functions as far as randomly connecting with people or allowing you to search for others who share similar qualities, etc.

I think paying a fee to only talk to people you know is kind of dumb, you should be able to have video chat with random people.

    Any input?

My thinking was that I already have a raft of video chat applications - MSN, Yahoo, ICQ et al - last thing I needed was a proprietary version which was specific to Dell hardware. As such, I ignored it.

I'd be interested to hear the answer to this though - I might give it a whirl if people are actually using it.

Yeah, I didn't look at all that stuff in yours. The only extras I'll ever add is CompleteCare and a 3 year warranty (didn't on this one because I have a M1530 that's loaded up with all that good stuff, and its my mobile one, this one sits on a desk). But after seeing the extras you added you got a good deal too. i just never look at the little things that add more like Mcafee, different color lids, etc.

I really missed the 9-cell battery on your order. Dell wanted a REDICULUS amount to upgrade to it, like $200+ or something. My M1530 I remember was a $60 upgrade to add an 'additional' 9 cell battery to the 6-cell already included, so I passed on the one for the studio for now.

indeed, the battery upgrade was not cheap, near $200. it would have been great to get the deal you mentioned. i plan to take this on trips, so extra coverage was important, as well as the battery.

as for the lid, my wife and i like it. we are into the sea, and surfing, and like the cool design. it is relaxed enough to take to work, but cool for home.

i pretty much decked this out out with those things, as well as the McAfee, because i plan to give this to my wife. i will then get something even better :)

    Hi all,

This might be my first and last post to this fine forum, but more likely I'll have questions to optimize my Studio experience and will search or post them here as appropriate. Nevertheless, I wanted to acknowledge help and suggestions obtained here which in the end influenced which boxes I checked on Dell's online order form. In brief, I've been a Dell user for several years starting with my (tech sector) employer standardizing Dell products which subsequently led to my own purchases of a Dell PC and (later) Dell laptop.

So how did I end up ordering a Studio 17? My home PC is upstairs and I've found I enjoy using wireless downstairs while watching (more like listening) TV. I rarely bring home my Dell Latitude 14 work computer and decided I wanted something with larger screen for this stated purpose. Why not a Studio 15? I "built" several Dell configs and saved them to Carts, including Inspiron 1525, Studio 15 and Studio 17. In the end, I decided this laptop would be essentially dedicated for home use, since for travel use I have a Dell 700m (12.1") ordered when current (thank you Fat Wallet!) strictly for compact travel purposes - the 700m still serves me well! The added weight and bulk of a 17 (especially with 9 cell battery) will not be an issue for my purposes.

My Studio 17 will be built and shipped in a few weeks including the major items below. Guidance by NBR resulted in my choice of display, keyboard and RAM memory. My deal was EPP through AAA (better than employer's EPP): -$419 EPP - 6% AAA coupon - 4% DPA discounts (thanks also here for clarifying how to get DPA discount). My final price: $1014 + $19.99 shipping + $8 "disposal" fee + sales tax.

    2.1GHz/800Mhz FSB/3MB cache
    Graphite Grey with Black Trim
    3GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2
    Back-lit Keyboard
Glossy widescreen 17.0 inch WLED display (1440x900)
256MB ATI MOBILITY RADEON HD 3650
    320GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
85Whr Lithium Ion Battery (9 cell)

(Note: this message posted from Dell 700m while "assuming the position" in La-Z-Boy recliner with a nice glass of Cali red at hand!)

of course. but then i would be building a laptop, which, obviously, i did not want to do. this way i was able to get exactly what i wanted, made to order, already configured, working perfectly (i hope), and all covered under one company's warranty, save the battery.

Anyone got any ideas on a bluetooth keyboard to run with Studio 17. I've already got the wireless mouse so I won't need a package deal. I've seen some one ebay but didn't know if anyone had any suggestions. It will mostly be used to sit back on the couch and use my 52'' sammy as my monitor.

Logitech do good keyboards including a couple of cordless ones. If you just want remote control for watching movies etc, they do a mini one which looks funky, though it's not cheap (83 quid on Amazon). http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/keyboards/keyboard/devices/3848&cl=gb,en

Which mouse did you go for? I'm thinking of getting a wireless mouse to stop me from dragging the laptop onto the floor when I nip off in the middle of a Warcraft session...! Got my eye on this one.

he he he... being a WarCrackHead myself... i like the mouse...
i normally keybind the <back> button to be the run/walk function, and being a warrior, the mouse scroll wheel lf and rt serves as a stance cycle in opposite directions... with the use of macro...

personally, i use the VX revolution, not the nano, i like the slanted surface, easier on my wrists... less strain...

you guys notice, much of the exhaust on the Studio does get somewhat covered up (with about 1/8" gap in between) with the screen when you open your screen... causing that portion of the screen to be tad warmer?

I want to have the touch buttons lit up all the time, the ones above the keyboard that control the speakers volume and the mute. Is that possible? Is there a hot key for that like the keyboard lights.

Completely as an aside, how are you finding WoW performance on the 1735? I'm going to start a separate thread on this cos I think I've found something odd, but I'd be interested to see how someone else got on before I "show my hand" as it were.

I need to rethink keybindings a little, gonna map one of the sidebars to the number pad I reckon (instead of ALT-blah as they are now). I can see how the scroller to stance-dance would work though.

Interesting... I might have to go down to PC World to be patronised, er, I mean, to have a play and see which I like (before buying it from somewhere sensible). I was going for the Nano purely because of the mini dongle; I figured that a full-sized USB stick hanging out the side of the Studio is just asking to get knocked out of the thing (or worse) in the middle of a game.

Hm, I hadn't particularly, but I'll keep an eye out. All I'd really noticed heat wise was that the Studio seems exponentially less likely to render me sterile than my work-supplied Latitude D620, that thing gets propertoasty.

The small buttons you maybe able to find at a local walmart or such. 3M makes them and they call them bump ons which are used to put on cabinet doors or bottoms of dvd players etc. The come in various sizes and thickness to suit various needs You maybe able to check out the 3M webpage for a local distributor/store to pick them up. Good Luck.

I placed my order today 9/15 for the following system...My original order was to have the xpress xifi sound card which they now tell me is not available anymore via Dell. That sucks as from what I have read about the integrated audigy card does not sound all that good. I like to listen to music on my lapto which I currently on a Inspiron 1520 which was my first laptop and it works well even when multitasking. I am trying to see if inspite of them telling me I can get what I order as long as I order it within 30 days (Which I Did) if they will throw in the tuner as I can not get the sound card I wanted. We will see on that my ship date is 10/14 and the rep told sometime in Oct but maybe sooner, I can wait not a big deal. I have to give kudos to a lot of you on here the info you post as help me in feeling like I got a decent laptop for my money. I get epp discounts via my employer and with the few added discounts and a phone call to Dell save quite a few dollars. My question is about the sound card, I see that a few posters on here do not like the sound card, is it really that bad? I pplay music, do some internet dj'g and watch movies will the current sound card be that bad? I did bump up the from a 3gb to 4 gb memory even though I see I may not reap a whole of benefits but fig with the bump up in the processor every little bit helps. Let me know what you think and if this is a good laptop. I see most people have the same configure so I am guessing it is not bad. One last thing that I was concerned about was the broadband card which I was to get a free 7 day trial and on my new order it does not show and it does show a charge for the card which was to have been included in the price. I emailed my rep to look it to this and the fact the 7 day trial does not show and the rep advised it was, so that I have my rep looking into as well and the 12 handling which our company does not get charged. They advised me they will ship it out next day, so I am hoping rep will waive the shipping. I am looking forward to putting this through its paces. Thanks again for all the posts!!!
