I'm curious. I keep on reading these threads about "my screen is grainy" and "how do I get rid of the graininess" and "keys to getting a replacement screen" and so on. Two questions:
1) On Dell's website, once I put in my Service Tag and check my specs, I find that I have the "dreaded" Samsung screen. On my Device Manager, it's listed only as "Generic PnP Monitor." So first of all, is there something wrong that it's being detected as a generic?
2) What exactly constitutes "graininess"? Meaning, when I look at the screen, it's a little grainy. But to me, it looks fine. Now, before anyone says "well, that's all that matters, then!" hold on. Is it just that I don't know what I SHOULD be seeing? Meaning, are you guys with LGs looking at displays that are so "smooth" that you can't see a single pixelation or something? What exactly constitutes "standard" quality for the WSXGA+ that I should be accepting of?
Is it just that people like me are going nuts only because we're reading about a "problem"? Meaning, if I hadn't known about this, I'd probably be very OK with my screen. But now I'm like, "yeah, OK, but I paid a few grand for this and if there's a better one ...then I should be getting it!" *sigh*

Good questions. Being a desktop user for ten years, doesn't lend me much help when it comes to these issues. My first laptop will arrive tomorrow. Hope it's a good one.

sometimes ignorance is bliss....if you're satisfied with it don't worry about it or it'll just bug you.
-
I think I'm coming to that conclusion.

I just ordered my first laptop 2 days ago, the vostro 1400 with the wxga screen, I am a little worried because of all these threads. I will let you know what I think of it when it arrives. My dad has a Lenova and a Toshiba Satellite, and I am satisfied with the way their screens look, more so with the Lenova, but the Toshiba still looks great. I will have plenty to compare this Dell to!

admittedly my last post wasn't much help.
There's one suggestion tho instead of listening to what the forums might say:
take your notebook into BestBuy and compare the screens with the floor models there. Compare it against a light background preferably white.
You might come away satisfied with your screen, or that the problem if there's any is a minor issue for you, who knows... -

Click the "details" tab at the top, then select "Hardware IDs" from the drop-down menu. -

yeah I'm wondering about this too, my laptop is still in production. For your samsung screen, does it look bright and clear? Some people on the forums have said stuff like 'the samsung totally sux blah' which kinda scares me, dunno if they just have really keen eyes to find small problems, or are overreacting.

If it is not broken don't fix it.
I went through hell to get it right, six weeks later "3 laptops and 2 screen" and still with the wrong resolution laptop. and with grainy screen. -

I think I'm the only person on this forum that received the Samsung WSXGA+ screen who's happy with it. I posted on the other thread that it's bright, has very little light leakage and no graininess. I do have four other notebooks in my house to compare with, two WSXGA+ E1505's (one with a LG & one with a Samsung), a Sony Vaio (don't know the screen manufacturer) and a HP DV1000 (AUO).
If you get a bad screen you will know it like you got a slap in the face... I ordered a 1520 back in July and within two minutes of using it I knew I couldn't live with the screen. It was so grainy and sparkly looking that I couldn't hardly read text on it. I sent it back the next day. With my current 1530 I decided the sreen looked beautiful *before* I saw who the manufacturer was.

go take a look at some Sony laptops. Hang out in the store, read some documents. Bring an ebook on a flash key or something. Then rush home and spend some time on your M1530. If you don't do this, the story ends, you wake sup in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. But if you go check out the Sony - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the Dell grain goes.

I ended up not even bothering with the comparisons (although that's a helpful suggestion). I looked at the screen for a while and then decided, "hey, it's not that grainy ...but people are saying there's better and I did pay top dollar, so what the heck. Better get everything addressed early on, rather than spend a lot of time wondering." So I called up the XPS line and they told me that they'd either send someone over to replace it or I could ship it to them (which I may end up doing).
Hope it looks nicer or I'm going to look silly. -

Haven't they said the same theing about the Chei something screen?
OK, I officially hate myself for this, but I'm going to ask.
