    Hey!

I've been looking around the internet, with no luck so far to answer my question. Hoping you can help me out :D

Anyway, quite some time ago, I purchased a Dell XPS M1710 laptop; Vista Home Premium. Recently, after moving into my new job, I have decided I need to upgrade to Vista Business.

Would it be possible to purchase an OEM disk (such as one you buy with a piece of hardware from Newegg) and run that on my Dell machine, or will it not allow me to use it, as I'm required to use my original disk that came with the laptop?

    Thanks in advance!!

dont think u can upgrade directly from home premium to business.... most be a clean install

u can use an OEM disk from newegg... as long as its not a hp(or sometihng not dell)-specific disc [the original disc that came from ur laptop is a dell-specific disc)

Not sure about the whole "upgrade" thing, but you shouldn't do upgrade installations in general... they tend to break more easily than clean installs. That being said, you can indeed use a store-bought OEM or retail disk to install Vista Business on your M1710.

The Dell disk is not necessarily Dell-specific, though. You can use it on other machines; you'll simply need to provide a legitimate key.

You can not upgrade it but an oem disk from newegg would work but would force you to do a clean reinstall.

Thank you all very much for the help. I will do a clean installation with the store bought OEM disk.
