I noticed on the dell home order pages, that the reinstall CD option seems to have dissapeared, have they stopped giving them out? The only option I see for them is

XP Media Center with CD, Remote, and TV tuner

so it seems the only way to get the reinstall CD is to also get the TV tuner and MCE remote.

Also do the reinstall CDs come standard on teh XPS 1210 and XPS 1710? And what about the PowerDVD, Dell Media Ex, and SOnic CDs, are they still available free on request?

I've never seen a Dell notebook not come with the reinstall CD. The only exception would be business machines where you specify the no OS option. Every Dell I've seen come through my shop had the OS disc, the driver disc, and one or two expanded software library (nero, sonic, office trial, etc) discs.

From what I understand they would have to indicate that no discs were included with your purchase rather than that they WERE included. I think that's something Microsoft has in place to prevent piracy, among other things.

Also, I don't think you can just request the OS cd anymore. Most of those reinstall discs are becoming serial free, meaning that you have a CoA and a serial number, but you don't need to enter it during the install process (I may be wrong, but this is the trend I've been seeing).

You can always e-mail Dell's sales department with that kind of question, I've found them to be rather prompt if they think you're making a buying decision =). Tech support is slightly slower, since you've already given them your money.

Well actually Dell did have a period where they sold laptops without any cds including the original OS cd. I know this because my computer was like that when I got mine. But it was really simple actually, I just called Dell and they sent the cds within 2-3 days. It is just a hassle that you have to call Dell and get those cds.

None of the Dell disks require any serial numbers during installation - never have and probably never will. The reinstall OS is tied to the Dell bios and usually doesn't work when used on a different machine.
