Having found the vast quantity of crap thats on my notebook i started following the guide to reformat but Dell responded with the following when i requested the restore cds and software:

"Thank you for contacting Dell Online Customer Care.

We apologize for any inconvenience this issue may have caused.

In order to comply with Microsoft regulations, Dell is no longer allowed to ship
Microsoft Operating system CD to the customers. As a reason, we are no longer
shipping Windows CDs with the systems according to Dells policy worldwide. We
appreciate your co-operation in this matter."

Needless to say im not a happy chappy.
Has anyone else had this problem and can i simply use someone elses if theyre willing to send me theirs? (im in the uk if that makes difference)

Really? Maybe it was just the wording? Can't you order the PC with a restore disc?

Oviously something could have changed recently, but perhaps they just got their wires crossed in what you were asking for. it also possible that UK and US policies are different.

However, if you do find someone with the DELL XP Restore Disc it should work on your Dell.

Sorry I don't have much to add.

No, I think you have been misinformed - while my E1705 was gotten through work and for work purposes, it didn't come with restore CDs, so a prompt online chat resolved that and I got mine in 2 biz days foc. I believe there are some other forums detailing how to get the CDs FOC as well - you might want to do a google with Dell, restore cd etc..

Well, i thought i was very clear in what i was asking for...and they said " dell worldwide policy"... maybe they have something against me. Well if anyone is willing to send me the cds, i'd send them back with a few pounds (or bucks) to compensate shipping fees - email: [email protected]
    cheers

You need to chat with Dell's technical support. Judging from the sound of it, it talked to order support. They do send out the restore discs. They are not retail discs, but OEM discs. You should be able to get them with no trouble at all.

yea theres 2 types of disc, and neither are a stand alone windows disc. One is a backup disc wich contains a mirror image of the drive, contains all the spamware, and formats your hd when you use it, and then an dell oem disc wich is a windows install cd that only works with your series of laptops and has the OEM key embedded in it.
