Dell shipped the wrong version of windows with my first M1210 (Ordered around Oct 11th), since the screwup was XP Home and XP Media Center edition, a simple swap was not possible and they had to replace the whole system with a new once (Ordered around Oct 26th)
Here are some observations which I noted between the two systems
Batteries:
1st. 9cell and 6cell both manufactured in Japan by SMP
2nd. 9cell by SMP in Japan and 6cell by Samsung SDI in Korea. Oddly enough the Samsung Battery was charging beyond its design Capacity
Power Usage when on battery before and after KB918005 is -17.3 to -17.6W at full Idle
A/C Adapter.
1st. Came with an A01 65W adapter made by Delta Electronics weighing apx. 219g
2nd. Came with an A02 65W adapter made by Liteon Technology Corp weighing apx 211g
Screens
Both systems came with the A/V Package, and both systems came with the Toshiba Screen 58E something something...screens look identical
Physical Appearance
-The Bluetooth LED on the first is brighter then the second
-The Media buttons along the front match the other blues on the first, but the second has media buttons which are more of an Ocean blue, more subtle and a lighter blue.
-Gaps between panels are slightly different, but nothing significant.
-Keyboard flex is slightly more noticable in the second unit
CDRom Drives
1st - phillips Sdvd8820 - Makes funny noises (Supposedly a terrible drive based on Google...)
2nd - TSSTcorp TS-L632D - Seems nicer?
Wireless Sticker
Both are identical except that the old system says P/N RJ051 A01 and the new system says P/N RJ051 A00
Dell Utility is showing that the old syhstem is 2-3dBm better..
Upon opening the unit I saw that the cards were actually identical, swapped them anyways, results were the same.. maybe the old unit had a better antenna.
RAM
Based on the Dell Diagnostic Utility, the RAM on the new unit seems 'slightly' slower then on the old unit.
The new unit (2nd) was consistantly giving Sandra results of 1-2% less, so I swapped the memory in the two systems (1st had Samsung, 2nd had Hynix) and results stayed the same.
Temperatures
1st CPU Idle: 43-45C HD Idle: 38C (And the system Fan is always on) 0-1%Load
2nd CPU Idle: 52-59C HD Idle 38C (Temp gradually goes up...system fan turns on at 59C and once system reaches 51-52C it turns off...then the process repeats... temp gradually goes up...etc.) 0-2%Load
Otherwise the two units seem identical as they should be. (When I opened the systems I saw that not even the system fans were the same...a few other internal parts were slightly diff too)

manufacturing process is varient.
if you were to eat 1 pb and j sandwich everyday for a week
would you expect your toilet to look the same everytime u doodoo?
different hardware has obvious changes. and still only has 2% max difference?
just enjoy the dang system
edit: on second thought temps would worry me too. are the chips on system 1 &2 same speed? did you move? is cpu tested on same surface?
i really should sleep its 6am -
Not to worry! I am enjoying the system alot, it's just in my nature to try and get the best out of what I have and know everything I can about them!
Interestingly enough, I did the tests in exactly the same conditions.
Same Time
Same Place
Almost same software, system 1 had XP Pro with most drivers
System 2 had XP Media Center with all drivers + a bit of software
Both systems were tested on the same surface in the same room
For reference, the room was probably around 24-26C and the surface was a persian rug so they could still breathe but it wasn't as nice as a table. Processor is a T7400.
One thing to keep in mind though, when I opened up the systems I noticed that the fans weren't the same.
Anyhow, Im doing a 3 pass complete wipe on my old system now in prep to send back to dell -
Wow, some one thorough.. Not really surprised that some of the parts are different, but in the end its pretty much the same performance. So you took the best parts of the two different laptops and put them in one? Good idea.

Now they ship the toshiba lcd with a/v package?. Thankfully I ordered earlier and got AUO screen which is reported to be the best for m1210.
-
edit: Figured it out. I ordered my M1210 last month and under device manager>Monitor>+Expand>
It says:
-Default
-Default
-Plug and Play
The Plug and play details says AUO. Can I delete the other 2 default? Even though I have the AUO LCD, watching a DVD movie is only good when viewing it from straight on. A slight viewing from an angle and the image doesn't look as clear. Is this normal?
Thanks for letting me know. -
