The Inspiron 1420 is the closest thing to my ideal laptop. I'm a college student with portability needs and have narrowed down my laptop choices to 14.1" screens. 13.3" screens just seem like toy computers to me, and 15.4" are too bulky. 14.1" screens seem to be the golden ratio for me. But the VAIO CR is too flashy for me, and the Toshiba Satellite M205 isn't powerful enough. The Dell Inspiron 1420 is the perfect blend of "Dell simplicity" and portability that I want.

However, the advent of the Inspiron 1525 to replace the 1520 that came out just 9 months ago leads me to believe that a replacement for thr 1420 is also underway. The 1525 came out in January, with ligher weight, sleeker design and thinner profile, and people believed it's 14.1" little brother would follow shortly after. With the new Penryn processors available, which give better battery life, less heat and morer power, this notebook computer would be ideal. Now it's halfway through March and no word from Dell. I am getting ancy and am tempted to just get the 1420, but if it's successor is just around the corner I just know I will get buyer's remorse.

So this is the thread where 1425 rumors and news will go.

A Google search for Inspiron 1425 doesn't yield very many results (15), just a page at Dell's IdeaStorm website with users wishing for the 1425 to come out and a few people mistyping the 1420's name.

However, a quick search of a forum from our favorite notebook website reveals that a user claims to have seen the 1425 in a Staples store in Canada earlier this month. Users queried the claim and asked to prove it with pictures, but none came.

Additionally, another user copied and pasted a talk with a Dell Rep from a chat session that they claim is significant in proving the 1425's pending release. However, a careful reading of the chat log will show that the Dell Rep was ambiguous in their wording as to whether it would be good to wait for the 1425 or wait for better deals on the existing 1420.

Unfortunately, there haven't been any leaks or confirmed rumors about the 1425 on popular technology websites like when Engadget.com posted an article on the 1525 a month before its release. No such posts have appeared for the 14.1" counterpart.

My opinion is that the 1425 is in the works and will be released some time in April 2008, probably along with the coveted XPS M1530 LED screen option. Now if only Dell would make an XPS 1430...

    I'll keep you posted,

The 1525 doesn't have an LED option.
Why do you think a 1425 would?

chelet, the XPS M1330 has an LED option called "Slim and Light LED Display," but not the M1530, yet. It was rumored that the M1530 would have one sometime after its release back in December. Read Notebookreview's review on the M1530 here and look unde the "Screen" and look under the Screen section:
Unfortunately, you're right, the Inspiron line will probably NOT receive an LED screen because it is Dell's budget/entry level notebook.

Best Buy's weekly ad for 3/30/08-4/5/08 has 1420s on clearance.

To update this thread the Inspiron 1420 is now gone from several Dell sites, could the 1425 finally be coming now?

I just checked the Dell Australia website, and the 1420 is hiding. Its no longer under their four laptop categors (gaming, light/mobile etc), instead you have to specify only the 1420 Insprion before it will come it. Before the change it was under the Entertainment Tab.

Hmm, it's now almost 2009 and the 1420 has seen no successor since August 2007. I wish Dell would make a 14.1" laptop with the styling of the new minis.
