I can't speak from personal experience with the Inspiron 1545, but I can definitely guarantee Kingston as an excellent brand of memory. I've never had any problems with their memory, in plenty of different computer systems. I'm running 4GB of Kingston HyperX low-latency DDR2 notebook RAM in my Studio 15 right now.

Other good memory manufacturers are Crucial, OCZ, Corsair, and G.Skill.

If his current configuration is 4GB, then it's 2x2GB. He couldn't try 3GB without swapping one of the sticks for a 1GB.

Hi I got a Red Pentium Inspiron 1545 yesterday.
But I have reformatted me hard drive due to it being split in half for recovery.

But I have lost those dell wallpapers.

Has anyone got a copy's? If so please upload them, thanks, shine-away.

Thanks for the info! I went ahead and installed the new BIOS, but it seems like the fan still remains off until the cpu reaches a certain temp. Is there a way to find out what the new BIOS fixed?

70 is not a dangerous temperature for a CPU by any means. Load temperatures are generally safe until the high 80's.

i know but i like lower numbers :p, overclocked just by 200mhz the desktop got to 75-80 on prime 95. but w7 wasnt licking the overclock much it just slowed the pc to 1/4 of its normal speed even the hourclock i was going crazy until i restore the overclock and w7 got stable and good.

i bet if i undervolt this laptop y could get in to the high 20's :p on idle of course

Not likely. I have my T9500, which is a cool running 45nm Penryn processor to begin with, re-seated myself with Arctic Silver 5, undervolted as low as it will go without Blue Screening, and on a cooling pad, and 30 Celsius is the absolute lowest I've ever seen it, at startup on a completely cold boot.

Unless the Inspiron 1545 has some revolutionary cooling design improvements over the Studio 1535, then your numbers should be similar, since your T6400 is also a 45nm Penryn processor.

It could just be thermal interface degradation. Replacing the thermal pad with real paste might help.
That's perfectly normal, especially soon after a heavy load.

Yup, I know it's perfectly normal. In fact my temps are pretty good to be honest, with an idle temp of around 25 - 28 C.

I posted it because one of the posters asked about getting his temp down to under 30 C; and it's very very possible.

However, as long as your temps are not approaching the dangerous zone of maybe 70 C plus, then I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Yup, bought the Sager from a sale recently for only £80 more than the Inspiron cost me, but then I ordered a bit more RAM and it added up to £130 more. Technically not a Sager, but it's based on the exact same Clevo model., just not branded as a Sager. I can live with that.

The i7 is for the real heavy duty data processing work I do. I process millions and millions of records an hour, and the old Core 2 Duo is showing signs of age. Plus, the software I use can make use of more than 2 cores, so thought I'd treat myself. OK, so the graphics cards were purely for me - don't need them for the processing work I do )

ps, try to keep on topic otherwise we might get told off ;)

I'd suggest blowing out your fan vents with compressed air if your temp ever seems higher than normal. Dust buildup in the heatsinks will effect your temps. I try to clean mine out once a month at the latest.

Note, toadson said blowing out the vents. Please do not blow compressed air into the vents. the operation toadson is talking about requires the laptop to be taken apart. Search the forums for cooling; there is a post or two about this subject.

There shouldn't be a problem as long as you don't have moisture in the air and don't over-rev the fans. I used to take the two fans out of my Inspiron 9100 because it was simple, I won't do that with the 1545 since there is only one fan. Not sure what could be the problem doing it otherwise.

Because with some compressed air you get moisture sporadically whilst spraying it - and you don't want that going into your machine. Plus, ideally you'd want to blow the dust out of rather than into.

It's on the dell website; go to Support, then download drivers, select your model and it's all pretty straight forward from there.

Your HDD is there, if you look underneath you can see two screws and a bay that gives easy access if you want to upgrade.

Mine gets warm there, but then I upgraded my HDD to 7200RPM 320GB (wasn't an option Dell gave); but after running some stress tests none of the components in close proximity were heated much more than using the standard 5400RPM.

It's quite normal for that area to get a little warm anyway; especially as that is typically where you would rest your hand ;o)

Check your temps if you are concerned using something like HWMonitor click here or Everest (which is much more comprehensive but is shareware click here. Safe temperatures vary depending upon the manufacturer of your hardware, but typical safe zones are as follows:

CPU: Up to about 85-90 degrees Celsius
    GPU: 90-100 degrees Celsius
HDD: Up to 60 degrees Celsius

I doubt you are getting anywhere near these levels - would certainly hope not.

Just wanted to let you guys no, that hippix has kindly uploaded the preinstalled 1545 wallpapers. If like me you reinstalled vista so it takes advantage of the whole disk, you may have lost these, so here is the download link.

So you just bought a fully loaded Studio 15 and you are considering an Inspiron 1545?

This is why I thought you'd posted in the wrong thread - it makes little sense.

The Inspiron range is the "budget" notebook range from Dell. The Studio range are their "mainstream" notebook range. As you no doubt already have a better notebook, why would you want a Studio 1545?

So in answer to your question, no I can't justify it for you. Spending around £400 for a new laptop just to have a blue lid and a glossy black palm rest seems like an odd thing to do.

Hello there. I am a happy owner of a 1545 purchased at a Best Buy B&M in late January -- T6400 with 4GB RAM and 320GB HD running Vista Home Premium. For the first month of so I was getting a BSOD on bootup. I eventually traced it back to a forced shutdown made before Vista was ready to close (my fault for rushing it, I think), which corrupted an update and started a fatal loop. I brought the computer back to its original configuration and updated everything again, which solved my problem. Since then everything has been golden.

I was wondering if anyone knew just what exactly was changed with the BIOS update to A07. The Dell site isn't saying.

I'm not entirely sure as I can't notice any change. However, it is often difficult to tell with BIOS updates in all honesty.
