Good news for Dell users. Lionel Menchaca posted the following on the Direct2Dell blog yesterday evening:

See the content of the post for the details of which Dell models are affected and what procedure you must follow to get the problem resolved.

So I took Dell up on their offer and sent in my 17" True-life, glossy LCD for replacement. To my disappointment, they had replaced it with a non-glare LCD. When I called support to let them know of the mistake, they said that they could put on a glossy LCD, but as they haven't resolved the issue with their glossy screens, it would be best to stay with the non-glare! Since my warranty is up, they would not exchange it a second time when the vertical lines appeared again!
Apparently, if you are currently purchasing a new Dell 17" glossy laptop, you are purchasing a recalled product with known issues and limited life. Nisha did assure me that Dell research was looking into the problem.
    $200 upgrades shouldn't have problems.
