I'm getting really fed up now with these stupid grainy screens. I thought I found my 'dream' laptop in the new Dell's however all I read about them is 'grainy this grainy that'. Ahhh!!.

Basically, whose screen isn't grainy. Could you please post
    Resolution:
    Trulife/Anti-Glare:

    Thankyou.

what exactly do you mean by grainy? My 1520 is just fine.. If it's a big deal and I'd notice right away then, no I've got no problem..

No grain, anti-glare, and I'm pretty sure no anti-glare has it.

I *think* mine is what is known as "grainy" (more "shiny silk effect" to me) - I have WXGA+ (1440 x 900) and an AUO 2077 LCD - but it's very clear and easy viewing, and if I hadn't read all the comments on the forum, I probably would not have noticed or worried about it - I'm very happy with it.

(In my own opinion, some of the talk of graininess is a bit of mass paranoia / hysteria on the forums - but that's just my personal opinion! So please don't flame me! ;)).

Returned Inspiron 1520 WSXGA+ Trulife AUO. Grains were disgusting.

Seems like so far only WXGA+ and onwards has visible grain according to all your comments. If i'm gonna opt for either of the Dells its gonna be trulife and innitially was going to be WXGA+. I think I'm just gonna have to order one and see what happens.

    Thanks for your comments.

I already have a thread like this one.

Conclusion is that all screens that are WXGA+, model AUO 2077 are grainy.

Oh well, gues my attempted conclusion was a load of crap. I would go for WSXGA+ however I want to play and average amount of games meaning lowering resolution and getting a blurred image (I think).

Has anyone actually contacted Dell about this 'grainy' issue?

    this is very wrong...

I've been using a 1680x1050 resolution screen to play games for over 3 years now...originally on my 17 inch Sager 8790 laptop, and now on my vostro 1500...

First off, on the vostro 1500, i've played dawn of war:dark assault, Prey, and Overlord on all max settings, 1680x1050...

on my sager, i'd have to turn the settings down, and play games at all different resolutions...1440x900, 1280x800, etc, etc... all games usually looked great...definitely no blurring....sometimes the occasional game would require a 1024x768 if i could not play it at native resolution, and that meant it was just slightly stretched, but barely noticeable once you were playing...

anyways, dont let the higher resolution scare you...people are exaggerating when they say you cant play games at a lower resolution...

The point is that higher resolution stresses the GPU. Nothing will look as great as the native resolution of an LCD screen.
You cannot say that it's crisp in it's non native resolution, it just doesn't happen.

If you want to game at native resolution, i'd get the WXGA+ or WXGA.

I have WXGA Glossy, LG/Philips and there is no grain at all. In fact looking at lots of photos seemed grainy, but I later realized it's crisp enough to be showing the grain of the actual photos. What I thought was light leakage at the bottom I think is actually just poor viewing angle.

I took a bunch of pics before sending it back and none of them could capture how bad it was.

It's grainy, its like putting sand on your LCD and saying ... what, you don't like it? It's not being picky, it's downright irritating.

as far as i know and have read, there's no way to request a particular screen..the dell rep you are on the phone with has nothing to do with the guy in the factory putting the laptop together...

the worst part is, they lie to you and tell you they will make sure you get a good screen.. :(

how to tell what screen you have? i dont have my laptop in front of me, but i believe you go into device manager, go to properties for plug and play monitors, go to the details tab, then choose 'hardware id'

Until someone comes up with some type of standard, and until manufacturers can realistically adhere to this type of standard for every single LCD they produce, there will be variations in displays that end up in laptops.

The same thing happens with LCD panels produced for desktop displays(!) These variations can't be avoided, but some brands can be "better" than others.

Recieved my Vostro 1500 today with the LPLF300 wsxga+ (1680 x 1050) screen. I've reviewed plenty of pics of grainy screens, but can't find any problems with this one.

I've been extremely happy with the screen so far.

The problem with getting a picture of the grain is that it's very hard to photograph as most cameras will simply blend it in somewhat and it's much more perceptable with two eyes seeing it as some of the issue with it being visible is seeing it from two seperate angles at the same time.

It's not people being picky. It is extremely noticable, especially when you come from using any other laptop. Poor displays are unnacceptable.

neither one of my originals were grainy... the cpt screen was great minus the viewing angles were horrible... but the picture was really very nice.. it had HORRIBLE light leakage....went back

the auo was recieved next... again no grain.... HORIIBLE colors though... i literally could not get it to look right. i have calibration software and even with that it was no help... whites were literally yellow... bad bad bad...

third time was another auo same problem as the other... said forget it sent them back and re-ordered higher res hoping for a different screen...

    they were all wxga

    wxga+ @ 1440x900
    AUO2077
GRAINY -- a white blank page on MS Word is a disaster. its like there is oil over the screen or water (almost as if you clean your screen when it is on with white on the screen - take a tissue or something and wet it, then sqeeze the water out and wipe the tissue on the screen -- tada colored specks, execpt they are bigger and less numerous, and screen grain is nurmerous and not as big).
A bunch of colored specs. ew.

I asked the Dell Rep on chat that when they replaced the screen by mail in that the screen not be a AUO, and some manager said that would be noted. We'll see on Monday. (the notebook is already out and about3 miles away from my house, but dell doesn't pay for weekend delivery. grrrr)

Same here. My SEC is bright enough where I can deal with it...except for the yellowish-white colors that could become an annoyance. The AUO replacement is grainy, however it is much brighter. Both still have noticeable light leakage though.
