My dad's laptop that he got about 5 years ago is a great desktop replacement. It's never caused any problems. But my question is about the fan, it's really loud! And it's always on continuously. Is that normal? It's been like that since he got it. I've never heard a laptop so loud. I blow into the fans regularly but is there something else I can do to get rid of the noise, or is it normal?

    Thanks. :)

The thing has three fans, tried cleaning them all, thoroughly? Worked for mine.

... it also has a Mobile Pentium 4, or an associated Celeron, which could have a maximum TDP of up to 88W (and a minimum of 50W in some cases). A modern Core 2 Extreme or Core 2 Quad, just for comparison, has a maximum TDP of 44W and 45W, respectively. But yeah, dust out your fans; that will probably help.

Thanks for the help, I'm going to pick up a can of compressed air today and clean out the fans. I'll see how it turns out.

Sorry for the double post, but if I edit it it won't show that there's a new post.

I bought a can of compressed air and thoroughly cleaned out the fans on my dad's laptop. I turned it on.

It's completely silent! My dad was shocked. I couldn't believe how a simple can of compressed air can cause a laptop that you can hear 500 feet away to become silent. In fact, I'm typing on it now. :p Thanks for everyone's help.

You can install I8KFANGUI on your laptop to control fan speeds. You can set them to any speed you want, with the custom temperature fan control section of the program.

I had the chance to clean one of these systems out a while back, and the thing was loud after the clean out. But that was because one of the larger fans was missing a bearing.
