So, I notice in the new line of Inspiron notebooks, they're given either a 8400GT or 8600GT GPU. Seeing as how DX10 can only go up as time passes, I was wondering if these GPUs are able to fit into an older Inspiron 9400 in place of a 7900 GS. Or did the GPU connector and bus change between the old and new models?

So I take it by the silence that usually happens when I soon post in or create threads here that it's not possible, right?

I swear they only offer the 8400 GS not the 8400 GT?

Oh this would be better suited to be posted in the Gaming subforum.

I figured this would be best, since its about the two different Dell Inspiron series of laptops...

And the Dell site currently shows you can get, at most, a 8600GT GPU. I'd like to know if perhaps this would technically trump my 7900GS in terms of performance and could fit in my machine right now (in sig).

    performance depends on the game.

although that new drivers probably increase performance by leaps and bounds, so don't take this page literally. If you want to play DX9, stick with your card.

    don't know about connecting it.

Perhaps you should just give people time to answer. 2 hours between posts isn't much.

Simple answer: NO, they wont work.

I don’t have that many benchmarks to compare, but 8600GT is already performing on par with the 7900GS under DX9, therefore I think it’ll do better in DX10. 8700GT (DELL XPSM1730) on the other hand is much faster even under DX9.

Figured as much. They don't seem to like sticking with just one kind of GPU connector, do they?

Looks like my only hope in upgrading the GPU is with either a 7800GTX, 7900GTX or a 7950. Hard to find...

Reason I asked is because I'm part of the Crysis beta right now, and it's not running on this machine too well. The engine is a lot stronger than anything else, even Bioshock (which ran smoothly on my laptop at max settings). Not a slideshow, but not smooth, either. Of course, can't divulge anything about it due to the NDA.

Why would you replace a 7900 GS with an 8400/8600? The 7900 GS is best
