I have a Inspiron 9300 and checked the driver download page for Vista drivers. There are only drivers for XP. Is there a special link to vista drivers for older models?

I read some people were able to install vista and had problems with sound and video. Does this mean that microsoft drivers work for everything else?

Because it is an older system, Vista probably has generic drivers for your hardware. Be careful though, some devices may not be recognized. If that is the case, you'll have to do some hunting, since Dell doesn't have Vista drivers for your machine.

i used to have a 9300 and IIRC it installed drivers for everything except sound and video like you said. for video i just used xtreme-g mobile drivers for my geforce 6800 and for audio the drivers on the dell support site worked fine. but that was because i installed the 32 bit version of windows and its listed as compatible with vista. i dont think the audio will work if you have the 64 bit version.
