I just got my 1520. I tried putting in a music CD and it never loaded. Tried the same thing with a game CD and it never loaded. It isn't spinning, or making any noise. I went into the "computer" area and it said "OS (C :)", and "RECOVERY (D :)"

So what's going on? I'm guessing I'll have to send it back in and get a new one, right? UGH.

Your CD drive is dead. The first step will be to take the drive out and reseat it back into the computer. You can easily do that by removing a screw on the bottom of the notebook and sliding the drive out.

If that does not work, Dell can (and should) send you a new (not refurbished) CD drive that you can replace yourself. Rinse and repeat on how to change the drive.

Finally, the next step would be to either (1) get a factory repair or (2) return the notebook. They'll allow you to return it as long as you tried to fix the problem (like you installing a new drive).

    Good luck!

I find it rather difficult to comprehend why a computer would have passed testing without a functional CD drive...:confused2:

Maybe.... Ive only ever had 1 laptop and i knackered it years ago by taking it apart and forgetting how to reassemble it. The cd-drive if i remember correctly could be taken out just like the battery and re-inserted. Is that the case with vostros? Maybe it just needs a lil push because its came loose.

Open device manager, and see if there's a optical drive listed.

    This is absolutely unbelievable...

I'll try all of these things in the morning. I'm on the 1520 right now typing this and I have to say that it would be quite pleasing if only I could use the cd drive. However, something tells me I'll be returning it and buying something else. I refuse to sit my my ass for another 3 weeks waiting for a new one.

Thanks for the quick responses. Any other help for tomorrow will be appreciated.

if you call in to support and they find that the optical drive is dead, a replacement will be overnighted to you.

So it's only a quick process to replace the drive? Will I have to re-install drivers and stuff as well?

    Ok thanks.

One last question before I go to bed. There is a constant clicking/tapping noise coming from the left side of the notebook. Is this normal? It's extremely noticeable, but according to what I've heard the notebook should remain fairly silent even with the fans on.

Oh man. :( It should not require drivers, and it's pretty fast and easy to change it. Hopefully they send you a new CD drive.

you wont need any drivers for the cddrive. just remove the old on and put in the new one.

i'm not positive whats located on that side of the notebook, so i cant really give you an idea what to look into.
