I just got off the phone with Dell. I was going to change my color from expresso brown to jet black in order to 'hopefuly' receive it sooner but was told that the matte screens were not currently in stock for the black lid. I then checked the website and noticed that the only screen option listed is glossy. Are matte screens not available anymore?

Glossy screens are become a standard because they provide a more crisp image with better color and thus matte screens are hard to find. Are they great for intense lighting situations? Yes. But I think the only one I have heard of recently that does matte screens is HP. But I could be wrong.

I actually think that matte is better for color accuracy. The glossy layer makes things more "contrasty" but not true to life. I use the computer for graphic design and photography so I need accurate colors.. I'm sticking with matte because I hear that color calibration tools such as my spyder2 may not work well with glossy screens..

The glossy screens I've seen in the past always looked prone to colour bleed..so I guess accuracy issues are likely too.

I'm pro matte all the way..it's not like you can't make a great matte screen.

i have the anti-glare screen and as you said. they arent as crisp and bright as i want them to be, but as you said i think they are closer to actual colors in real life.

If you want lifelike colors, get a CRT. There is no such thing as a laptop with realistic colors. I use a GDM-FW900 for most of my design work.

Most importantly, the contrast of glossy screens are superior to most matte screens. This is pretty important for design, because you'll never be able to see proper blacks otherwise.

You can't just get any CRT. lots of CRT's see look pretty bad. Then again im used to my 21" sony trinitron and that looks awesome. But costs a crap load so it would want to

If you calibrate your LCD it should be fine. Yes, a notebook monitor won't be as good as a high end desktop monitor but sometimes you need the mobility.

CRTs are dirt cheap, except for really high-end models like the FW900. But even then, it's cheaper than any good 22-24" widescreen LCD.

I recently picked up two P1130s for $60 (Trinitrons inside). Two 20" at that price? Can't go wrong.
