I am looking to buy a new Inspiron 6000, which operating system should I choose? I will be using my computer mainly for flash video editing and schoolwork. Could I deal with xp Home until Vista comes out? Should I get the media center version even though I won't be watching TV through my notebook?

Also, what are the risks/advantages to a clean system install? If I would do a clean system install, would that make it impossible to use a McAfee subscription that comes with the computer?

I plan to use the 30% off coupon, do you think this is a good time to get a notebook or wait for a better deal?

    1. the only reason to get MCE is because you want to capture video/tv to your notebook

    2. the only reason to get Pro is if you have to log into a domain at school/work

    3. risk of clean install ? you've never done it before and you dont know what you're doing and so you freak out and have to call somebody for help. advantages ? faster, more stable, more efficient computer without any bloatware. also, if you remove dell's factory partitions, you can regain a lot of HD space.

    4. dell has been getting sparse with their coupons. i'd say 30% is pretty good considering.

    5. if you want the software that came with the computer, you need to notify dell that you want all the CDs.

    6. have you filled out the "what should i buy?" sticky in the hardware forum? there may be better options for you than the dell 6000. for example, HP's dv4000 comes with the x700 vid card for about the same price as the 6000. the x700 is much more powerful vid card than the x300 available on the 6000.
