I'm actually wondering if anybody had a similar experience - my 1720 order (ordered August 2nd) moved into the boxing stage on August 13th, where it has remained since. My ESD came today and instead of being informed of it's shipment, I was sent an email and a phone call saying it was delayed for an additional week until August 22nd. How can this be delayed an additional week, since it's completely built and just in boxing now (also, none of my parts had any delays associated with them during it's build - I chose alpine white, since when was that color backordered??)??

    OR

Is this just a generic delay message they've sent out since it hasn't shipped on time? Do they send out mass 1-week delay emails to anybody who's system hasn't shipped by 5:00 EST of their ESD, even if it might ship in the next 4 hours? Let me know what you think, thanks!

You never know with Dell. They send emails to cover their asses.

It doesn't matter if there were no delays when you ordered.

There weren't any delays when I ordered on the 17th of last month, but I still don't see my laptop.

So, it seems my second idea was correct. Once I received the delayed shipment email (additional 7 days until 8/22) I called Dell yesterday to inquire about the shipment date, since I had repeatedly been told it would be shipped on time. All they could say was "Sorry for the inconvenience" and they offered me $75 credit as compensation for this delay. I gladly accepted. Then early this morning, I was notified that my order had shipped! To make a long story short, I was credited $75 for a 1-day late shipment.

It seems they send a generic 1-week delay e-mail out as soon as an order hasn't shipped by its original ESD - probably just to cover themselves. So in my case, I got lucky by getting my $75 credit issued in the small window between this delay email and the shipment of my order the very next morning!

Did your status change on the website the day you got the delay email? This is my order history:

    8/19 Ordered
    8/23 Est ship date
8/24 Est delivery date (I chose next business day shipping)
    8/20 Boxing
    8/21 Boxing
    8/22 Boxing
8/23 Delay email received. New ESD 8/30. Status = Boxing. Not reflected on status page.

I just received a delay email, with new ESD of 8/30, but the status page on the web still says in production and ESD of 8/23. I really hope it ships today...it is time critical for me (only reason I ordered in the first place!).

from what i heard, they delay it because there aren't enough laptops to ship in bulk to satisfy the shipping costs, so they delay it until they do. at least, thats the case for those made outside of the US.

    OK, well....another update:

Status changed to "Shipped" on Dell order status page (after receiving a delay email this morning). However, the page shows est delivery date 8/28 - 8/30, with tracking info "Temporarily Unavailable".

I'm not sure I understand why my order is "Shipped" with next business day, but delivery is estimated to be 5-7 days from now? I really hope I have a surprise delivery visitor tomorrow with a big package from Dell.

(est ship date was supposed to be today btw)

I had next business day and they also estimated 3-5 days for delivery, but I got it the next day via DHL Ground Express (next day 3pm service). So you should get it the next day if that's what you have.

Ya, I think Dell's system must be set up to a default of 3-5 days. I paid for overnight and guess what...it was just processed through my local DHL facility, and is scheduled for delivery by 3pm today. Woohoo!

I'm very impressed....ordered on Sunday night, due to be received today, Friday.

I'm very delighted....timing was critical for me. Specs for my Vostro are:

    C2D T7300 (2.0GHZ)
    WSXGA+ (1680x1050)
    1GB DDR2 RAM
    8600M GT
    120GB 5400RPM SATA HDD
    Standard Audio
    Vista Home Basic
    DVD burner
    Dell 1390 Wireless
    Webcam

When I built the system, bluetooth, 9cell battery, and non-WSXGA+ screens were all showing to cause a delay. I wanted WSXGA+, ordered the bluetooth module through Dell parts (been sitting in the box waiting to install), and got the 6-cell battery. Eventually I will upgrade to 2GB or more RAM, but wasn't going to pay the Dell prices. 9-cell would be nice some day too I suppose, but i'm OK with the 6 cell for now.

Same here. I had next day shipping but it showed 3-5 days for delivery. But it was delivered the next day.
