So here is the deal. Ordered a 1520 on 7/11, delayed twice now the shipping date is 8/28. I need it WELL before. The only other machines I can get with similar specs are the Macbook Pro. I'd be running windows on it 99% of the time.

The only real downside to getting the Macbook is they don't offer accidental care.

Thats really something we cant really help you with, its your decision.

The Macbook Pro is probably more expensive.

Yeah dude the Accidental Care / LoJack / Dell's good warranty service is what's stopping me from cancelling...I was looking at the 15.4" MBP today and the P1 CXC90...as time goes on it's still getting tempting to look at other computers because Dell is just being plain ridiculous with wait times.

You can get the Sager2090/Compal IFL90 with similar specs for cheaper than the Macbook Pro. However, they are delayed as well. In fact, it seems like EVERYONE is delayed except for Mac.

I was deadset on Dell, but once I heard the truth about the ODMs in Taiwan I backed away. I'm not paying extra for the Dell brand name.

This is a total noob question, but does the MBP run Vista, Xp, etc?

My primary use for the laptop is developing commercial software, mostly on the .Net platform. Im thinking that Apple wouldnt be the best choice for that.

And since I used to be a senior engineer for microsoft, I have this subconscious aversion to the idea of buying a Mac-anything. Lol

I know i make the decision, just curious what you all thought.

The 2.4ghz MBP with 256mb 8600 DDR3 is $2299 with my education discount TODAY plus get a free ipod. The apple store is 5 miles away from my work... on my way home... right off the freeway... I was thinking of stopping after work and looking at them...

EDIT: I'm an architecture student, and the laptop would see 99% use of windows....

Does that include a 3 year warrenty & 2gb of ram? Also how does this "boot camp" work do you have to manually select to boot into windows each time, or can you set it as the default boot OS?

You select it when you boot. Also battery life in XP/vista on MBP is not so good, we have a few my office.

An ODM is an Original Design Manufacturer. For example, a company like Compal, they make a lot of notebook designs and then ship them off to big companies like Dell.

If you want to spend twice the amount of money for a mediocre product, go for it. I would touch a Mac if it came to me for free.

As much trouble as I have had with Dell's CS, their laptops are the best.

Unfortunatly it doesn't include a 3 year (just one, it is upgradeable to 3) and yes, it does have 2gb ram.

As Icemole said, You can boot to windows by default.

Here's a link with more information. Quanta is the #1 supplier followed by Compal.

EDIT: And as for someone saying that Mac's build quality is WORSE than Dell's... ahahaaha. Yeah, right. Maybe 10 years ago. Not now. Mac >>>> Dell. Especially the Inspiron refreshes.

The price isn't twice as much, more like $300 but it includes an Ipod....Lacks 3 year accidental care... But anyway...

I'm just second guessing myself. Why am I waiting 2 months for a Dell when I can get a MBP with a faster processor and DDR3 video for slightly more, and get it today? I need the laptop by next week. The 28th is too far away. Although I'd rather have 3 years of warranty and two buttons on my scroll pad.

    This sucks :(

You are the only I know who got the Blu-Ray with the 1520. Since the 1520 doesnt have HDMI, I dont see the point of it, really.

i had a mbp for a year. it was a nice machine, but it just got so damn hot. it was a c2d 2.16 model. i hated the fans loudness, and how hot the bottom got.
    my 1210 is much quieter.

I would just hold out for the dell, however long it takes. My friend has a C2D MBP and it dents and scratches really easy and the aluminum body heats up fast.

I got two coworkers at my office who bought MBP and they really love it. They said that you rapidly get used to OS X and you never want to get back to windows. If I had the budget, I would have definetly considered buying a MBP. They are so nice and well built. I'm just not sure if its ok for gaming. I just know it runs matlabs and stuff like that.

You can always start yourself a parallel windows session for your windows needs which is totally isolated to the rest of the computer.

OS X seems like so much fun also. As many now, Vista was "inspired" a lot by OS X but I think that all those features are still better implemented in OS X.

Anyways.. like many said, if you are not ready for a MAC don't go for it but at least go to a MAC reseller and ask him for a demo on the MBP and OS X functionalities to see if it fits your needs.

Hey 88GMCTruck--If you haven't already bought the MBP, why not just order yourself a new Dell 1520 from the Dell Outlet? They are just like new, and you get a full warranty and it ships the same day you order it (generally speaking).

Really, I've bought hundreds of Outlet PC's, and they look brand new.

    Why wait?
