I ordered an XPS M140 the other day and it is scheduled to arrive tomorrow, but I just saw today that they came out with the E1405. First of all, does anyone know if I can return the M140 after I receive it tomorrow without having to pay a restocking fee? It is about the same price for the two notebooks (1405 about $40 more after $500 off $1599). I have read all the reviews on the XPS M140 and it seems like an excellent notebook, but the 1405 has a core duo, is lighter, and has longer reported battery life. Any advice before tomorrow would be greatly appreciated.

You cannot return a system to Dell unless there has been a mistake on their part, or severe hardware issues. Otherwise, there is a restocking fee of 15% on all systems within 21 days of ship date only.

In the future, I would recommend checking here prior to purchase. As we have known about the E1405 for several months now, and could of recommended waiting...

I was able to return my xps 140 with no penalty for the simple reason that I wanted to buy a e1505 because it would be more computer for less money. I told dell this. The man on the phone offered me a 500 dollar concession to keep the m140; but I ended up returning it anyway. I did have to pay return shipping, but no restocking fee. just my experience.

thanks ves, that info helps. Do you know if there is a certain person or division that you have to talk to to be able to avoid the restocking fee? Also, I am wondering what opinions people have on a reliable, older system, or a newer, "better"? system

Your best bet for being able to return the system without having to pay a restocking fee is to NOT OPEN THE BOX! If the box is sealed, they will take it back, no fee. I'd call Dell BEFORE your M140 arrives, and make sure of everything. Then, inquire about REFUSING the shipment. If you REFUSE the shipment, it gets sent back NO CHARGE TO YOU (but may take longer for Dell to credit you back the money).

Lots of options, but don't pay any restocking fees. They're ridiculous and unnecessary.

Good luck, and YES, i'd get the E1405 instead of the M140. The M140 is a very nice machine...I love the size and weight, and am really looking forward to getting an E1405 (as soon as they offer a higher-end video option like in my E1505). You just can't beat the 14.1" size!!!
