Recently I ordered an Inspiron 1720. Despite having to cancel my order 4 times and not getting any additional monetary concession for this, I have chosen to purchase the 1720 anyway because I needed a new desktop replacement for my old Shuttle PC. Also, I have a long history with Dell Desktops and Laptops through home and work life (I was breifly a campus computer consultant).

Anyhow, my current configuration will not be used for gaming (as some many of the ones posted on this board will) so I wanted to know if tihs would be an acceptable config overall since it will be my first laptop purchase. Ideally, I will be using this to watch movies, listen to music (5.1 speaker setup), brose the internet, and regular office work.

DISCLAIMER: The weight of the notebook has absolutely no importance to me as I routinely carry more than 12-15 pounds around and spend a good deal of time working out.

Yes, what is the price for the notebook. Also, with the specs that you have you can surely get a computer that is smaller with the same hardware.

Oh, the price was for about $1140 pre-tax. I really prefer larger screens as I already have a 19 inch lcd screen at home and found a 14 inch work one (Latitude 610) not quite spacious enough for me. So with that in mind, what do you think?

Have you checked out the 1920x screens at all? You get a lot more pixels to work with, and its not too bad on a 17 inch laptop. Might be worth the upgrade if you need a lot of screen real estate. Other than that, seems ok. Check prince on Inspirons at Dell Home and Dell Small Biz (Vostro 1700) to make sure you are getting the best price.

Yeah, I checked the Vostro. The price is a little better but I wanted a different color laptop. Also, I am thinking of getting a vostro for my dad so I didn't want the same computer lying around.

The main deterrent that prevented me from getting the higher resolution screen was the glossy. I am not a fan of glossy at all and even before I started hearing complaints about glossy screens I assumed it would be a nuisance. I guess I will see how the anti-glare is when it arrives but I am a bit resistant to a glossy screen.
