I'm newly-registered, but not new to notebookreview. I wanted to thank everyone who has contributed with forums and reviews--you guys have really helped me in my notebook research. I'm going to try to contribute a bit myself now so other people can get help.

My wife and I are pretty devout Dell users. She had an old Dimension 4500s and I've got a Dimension 5100. My wife, a school teacher, got some new technology for her classroom this year (a Mimio board www.mimio.com) that would make her owning a laptop a really nice thing. She's also starting back on a masters degree in education. A couple of weeks ago, I ordered her a Insprion 6400. I found a great set-up through dealcatcher.com, called Dell, set up a small business account (I can't begin to tell you how fast Dell SB calls are answered--great customer service from my experience), and ordered a system with the follwing specs:

    80gb HDD
    TrueLife Display
    Core Duo Processor T2050 (2MB/1.60GHz/533MHz)
    1 GB Ram
    internal WI-FI and bluetooth

Great set-up. She really likes it. I'll write more specifically about it later.

I'm a minister at a small church (with a small technology budget; in other words, I buy my own "business computer"). My old work computer was sluggish on its best days. I'm also a masters degree student. Anyway, to make a long story short, I ordered a 640m for myself two days ago--again with a link through dealcatcher. I am completely taken with my wife's computer, but I don't need to use it as my primary home computer, so I wanted something a little bit smaller.

Intel Core Processor DUO T2050 (2MB/1.60GHz/533MHz)
    TrueLife
    1 Gig Ram
    120 GB HDD
    Integrated wi-fi and bluetooth

We're not gamers or anything, so both of these computers suit our needs--at a reasonable price. Our opinion of the 6400 has been very positive thus far (save for the oft-mentioned bloatware that I'll be removing from the other computer soon enough), but I'll try to write some more in-depth reviews.

I'm pleased to be a part of this community!

i had the 6400, and my bro the 640m
they're both great for the price, but i found the 6400 just too bulky, so i sold it and got a 14"
my bro is still happy though

On the 640m, does the standard 6-cell battery jut out from the back a little bit or is that just the upgraded 9-cell? Some pictures I see have that little bar-looking thing on the back and some don't.

The 6-cell will fit flush with the notebook - the 9-cell will stick out however.
