I'm going to get a M6300. Can I buy more RAM and a larger hard drive and install it myself vs paying for these upgrades? It seems like those upgrade options are a little high. Would that void Dell's warrenty? I usually use desktops and have built my last couple of computers but laptops are new to me.

You are perfectly entitled to replace the RAM and hard drive yourself. In fact, most people that I know buy the least amount of RAM due to the fact that Dell and the like charge exorbitant rates to literally just push a stick into a slot.

I believe that you void the warranty on that part you're replacing, but not the whole laptop. I'm not 100% sure about Dell's policy, though.

dell only warrents the parts they sell to you. replacing parts with others will not void the rest of the laptops warranty, however say you replace your ram and your ram dies, dell will not cover it, you will need to contact the ram manufacturer for a replacement. Same goes with the hard drive.

Thanks. Do you need special tools for working on the laptop?
