When I'm ordering Dell by phone, is it possible to get a bargain? Let's say I put together an Inspiron 1520 that costs $1500, and I use the $350 off coupon, any chance I could ask the guy to lower the price to under $1000? Any chance the guy could lower the price AT ALL even if I don't use coupons or other discount stuff?

Doupt that you can get under 1000.
You can tell him that its slightly over your budget and tell sound unsure of buying it then you can probably get him to "seal the deal" buy eather throwing in some extra stuff or knuckling down the price some more. -
hm it's hard to get a bargain on dell because they have to run it through their pricing department, meaning they have to ask another department who isn't speaking to you to lower the price. i have heard people get up to 50 bucks off, but i'm sure they know how through alternative means like free shipping or a free upgrade.
However, I got a really good deal today. I maxed out everything except for the screen, i stuck with a 1440x900, 2 gigs of ram only. but i got the draft N, 160 7200 rpms, t7500, bluetooth for 1600 after tax and shipping so a deal can be found. -
i got a free printer and the notebook core bundle for free

Maybe I could lower my wanted specs and get a bargain and have them bump up a certain spec that I lowered?
-
that might be harder, i think it's easier if you overshoot your computer and be like, this is the price i want it as and they'll be like i dono it's too much, and u'd b like okay i can compromise on these things only if not i'm just going to call somebody else.
another post on this board suggested that you build the computer online first that you want and tell the person on the phone the price you got online and they'll definitely try to beat it -
I was on chat today and the sales person told me if i built and saved the computer to the cart he would look at the final price and knock a little off.
Before they gave me a coupon code, didn't happen this time. -

If they had the $500 off selected $1399 Inspirons coupon, I wouldn't even bother calling... Do you think Dell will give out those 500 dollar coupons like before?
-
Just my guess, but I'd say no. They've already got the $350 coupon in effect thru mid mth and my sense is they are getting inundated with new Inspiron orders. I've heard there's a general push to eliminate coupons, special discounts, etc to bring more consistency and simplicity to the ordering process. Cuz it SURE AIN'T NOW!!
This being my first foray in ordering from Dell, I gotta say I can't believe how twisted up the whole online process is. I like the build-as-you-go approach, but my gosh, they do nothing but confuse you based on which starting point you choose on the same freakin model. Every option shows differently depending on where you started from, some prices are extra, some included (cuz of where you started from) and some options (like some HDD sizes for example) don't even show depending on what your starting point was. And THEN to top it all off, you get to the final screen and have a 50/50 chance you picked the right base config to be able to be able to use the coupon.
I know it's all done to act as a lead and draw people in who end up just ordering because they're tired of throwing away all the effort they put into that point, but ya know what, I bet it turns off just as many others who just get fed up and go to Best Buy, see the darn price on a bright yellow tag and say "I'll take it!"
There, I feel much better now.... -
Yes you can. I did.
I recently purchased a 1505. While configuring it online, I called in with a question. The salesperson I spoke to said that when I was ready to buy, call him and he could always save me money. So when I was ready, I gave it a shot. He saved me $100 off the online configured price--which was already discounted with coupons, etc. -
I know of several people who did get fed up and went to BB. -
It's actually very simple if you use this method:
Ignore the "better", "best" models. And don't use the links from the deals pages.
Go to dell.com and choose the base model and configure it however you want. You get all the options that way. Apply the coupon code on the shopping cart page. Done. -

I just know they were happy with their purchase and still are. -

Have you tried online chat to try and bring the price down? -
ALWAYS order by phone, you can customize better, get much better deals and talk to a real person which is always good as you know your order is secure and if any problems need to be rectified. I saved over £650 here in the UK by phoning a representitive and was very pleased

online chat=free next day shipping
all for asking a dumb question -
