Hello Everyone. I am planning on purchasing a Dell XPS 1730 laptop in the not too distant future. I have called several of the 1-800 numbers to get answers about certian components and every time I have called I have spoken to person in a call centre in India. The one person in particular seemed VERY eager to take my order over the phone and he told me that if I ordered over the phone that the system would be processed and shipped immediatley and I would have a "Direct Link" to him to find out the status of the computer, but if I ordered online it would take at least 7-10 business days just to get a "confirmation" call from Dell to confirm the configuration and to then begin building the system. I have 2 questions for anyone reading this

    1) Is there such a difference that anyone knows of ordering by phone vs online orders?

    2) Anyone know of a number to speak to someone in Canada and not a calll centre in Asia??

I ordered over the phone and managed to haggle a little with the CSR and got exactly what I wanted and saved $70 off of the website price. I know I have read of others getting deals over the phone too.

I don't know of a way to direct your call specifically to Canada except for maybe XPS support or Dell Parts Canada. But they would ask for your Service tag (which you don't have yet) and likely just transfer you to Sales which may be controlled overseas, I don't really know that for sure though.

From the time you make your order from eather online or on the phone will be the same.

The only advantage is that some I have heard can haggle the price. Just when you order on the phone if you do. Follow along on the web site and check every price.

The key advantages of the ordering by phone are (i) to be able to haggle over the price (and if the rep is keen to get your order then they may be more willing to cut a good deal); and (ii) include items in the order that aren't listed on the website. As a minimum you should be able to get a discount on the delivery. The best strategy is to demand a better price than something similar from another manufacturer.

You just have to put up with getting routed through to India. They have access to the same computer system as everyone else.

I don't believe the bit about jumping the queue.
