I noticed shortly after placing a recent order that I was overcharged on sales tax. It isn't by much, only about $5. I tried emailing "Customer Care", who just kept telling me that my order "is considered a personal purchase and is subject to sales tax. The amount charged as tax on your order cannot be refunded or adjusted." They have also told me that I need to contact the Sales department with any further questions. I really don't want to sit on the phone for hours over $5, but I'm getting further and further annoyed with "Customer Care". Plus, how much money could Dell make by just overcharging everyone a few dollars on tax??? Is this for sure something I need to correct over the phone with Sales, or is "Customer Care" just continuing to give me the run-around?

do you live in the U.S? if you do each state should have their own departments where consumers can call to see if they are being charged too much on sales tax. just research what the department is and call them. i know for new york its 311 but i dont know about other states.

The chances of Dell overcharging tax by just a few dollars is highly unlikely. Dell wouldn't risk their business over something stupid like that. Contacting Dell really doesn't take nearly as long as other businesses, 10 minutes at most to talk to someone. If you call again let us know what they say.

Update: I finally got someone in "Customer Care" to give me an email address for their tax department. (I really didn't want to call "Sales", as I suspected they wouldn't be able to give me a straight answer, either).

Turns out that, in addition to the MN sales tax, they also charge 0.15% County tax (didn't know they added that to online purchaes), AND a new 0.25% Transit Improvement tax that just started here on July 1, 2008.

So now it all adds up!
